It would be an understatement to say that 2024 has been a strange year for Australian coin collectors...

There have been 18 new coins released into circulation this year, including the standard designs coins with the new King Charles III effigy and the recent purple poppy.

Did you know that coins in circulation were meant to have two different effigies on the heads side (obverse) this year? However, people have been finding 2024 coins in circulation with the Queen's older effigies (from the 'change of monarch' set).

In fact, there have been a lot of sets released in recent years with unusual effigies and dates, and it's easy to miss unless you're looking closely.

So one of the many changes we've made to the Pirate Guide this year is to highlight unusual effigies to look for, so they're easier to spot if you come across them.

We have just released the updated 2024-25 version of the 'Pirate Guide to Collecting Australian Coins', but there are a lot more updates than just new coins.

The Royal Australian Mint has released the latest mintages in their October 2024 annual report and this new edition of the Pirate Guide has these mintage figures.
