There's some big coins news happening this week, and I wanted to make sure you heard about it in time.

One of the most prominent publications in Australian numismatics is celebrating a big birthday. The Australian Coin Review Magazine (ACR) is turning 60 in July 2024.

You can't have a celebration like this without a coin release! So, there is a special Australian coin being released to coincide with the birthday, but this is not any old coin - it's actually an updated release of the iconic Australian 'Swan Dollar'.

One of the significant moments in the ACR magazine's history was the release of the 1967 Swan Dollar. This coin was not legal tender, but it is an important and unique piece of Australian coin history.

So, what is the Swan Dollar? It’s a coin that was released in 1967 as part of a competition (run by the magazine) to design a dollar coin for Australia. Bear in mind that 1966 was the start of decimal currency so this was many years before the 1984 dollar coin was released (it shows 100 cents instead of $1).

There is a great article in the new JUNE issue of the ACR magazine (available now) that goes through the history of the Swan Dollar, the competition, the minting process for these coins, and why there are only 7 gold coins remaining.

The original 1967 Swan Dollars are currently valued at thousands of dollars! In 1967, there were 3 variations of the Swan Dollar released - gold proof, silver proof and silver.

In 2024, the ACR magazine is releasing 4 different variations of the 2024 Swan Dollar - gold proof, silver proof, silver and bronze.

If you have a subscription to the ACR magazine, you'll receive a bronze Swan Dollar for free.

While there’s no guarantee that these coins will be worth more than RRP, the reason I'm letting you know about this is that the pre-ordering starts today (June 1), so I wanted to make sure you get a chance to order a coin or subscription.

Note that the coins will be shipping in September.
