NATIONAL ARTIST CONVENINGS
SEPT. 15 & 20
Americans for the Arts is hosting four convenings this coming fall to assist local arts agencies to become better players in support of individual artists. The first two meetings will be for artists to express their thoughts on the following subjects:

Moving from Surviving to Thriving: Fulfilling artists' basic needs by addressing barriers to a high quality of life.

Sustaining Artists' Businesses: Discuss how to continuously support artists as creative economy drivers.

These will be followed by two convenings in November for local arts agencies (arts councils and commissions) to respond to insights gathered from the September artist-focused sessions.

The convenings will be hosted by Dr. Melissa Crum, an artist, author, researcher, and founder of the consulting company, Mosaic Education Network, LLC, who infuses the arts, research, storytelling, and critical thinking into professional development, community building, and curriculum development (see below for full bio).

Dr. Melissa Crum is an artist, author, researcher, and founder of the consulting company, Mosaic Education Network, LLC. Mosaic infuses the arts, research, storytelling, and critical thinking into professional development, community building, and curriculum development. Dr. Crum has facilitated training sessions across the U.S., creating a non-judgmental and refreshingly honest look at privileges and privately held beliefs. Her workshops focus on workplace culture development, equip educators, leadership, staff, and board members with the skills to implement inclusive and equitable practices.

By creating a brave space, Dr. Crum’s workshops allow organizations to critically investigate policies, workplace and learning culture, and relationship dynamics. Together, she empowers teams to positively dismantle systemic patterns, build authentic communication, and instigate radical growth company-wide. Dr. Crum has earned degrees from The University of Florida and The Ohio State University. She is an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) qualified trainer and SHRM provider. She currently lives in Columbus, Ohio.

The Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) is seeking at least ten (10) emerging teaching artists who will participate in a paid ($1,000) professional development training program that serves older adults (55+)

COA will provide best practice strategies for working in the field of creative aging. The emerging teaching artists will shadow mentor teaching artists in 8 session programs which will deliver sequential learning and active engagement for older adults.

Teaching artists are individual practicing artists who specialize in teaching both in the classroom and in the community. The passion and commitment, experience, knowledge and skills that teaching artists bring to the classroom and to the community help to engage students (of all ages) in authentic arts and arts integrated learning, and to advance creative and critical thinking.

While teaching artists are teaching partners, there is no requirement for teaching artists to be certified teachers.
