LIZ BANNISH

Liz Bannish is Studio Manager and Collaborative Printer at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. Among her duties, Liz provides studio maintenance and works with artists and students to develop their work and produce fine editions of printed art. Her personal work spans the media of sustainable and traditional printmaking and includes relief, etching, lithography, and alternative photography. Writes Liz of her images: "Marine themes come up in my work because the ocean is why we are here. I find it a feasting ground for metaphors on the human condition. Sometimes the creatures and the sea represent themselves in their own fishy glory, and other times I am using them to scrutinize the systems of oppression and destruction that we human are the actors in. Fables, feminism, and 20th century aesthetics run through most of it.Liz earned her BFA in Printmaking and Art History from UMass, Amherst, in 2011, winning 2nd best in show in her class for her senior thesis. She then interned for Zea Mays Printmaking, bringing their research in non-toxic printmaking to SGC San Francisco in 2014.  Liz served as Printmaking and Photo Technician for Smith College for five years, running their printmaking studio, letterpress studio, photo darkrooms, and OSHA compliance programs. She has trained with masters Barry Moser (Pennyroyal Press), Peter Pettengill (Wingate Studios), and Liz Chalfin (Zea Mays Printmaking). Website | Instagram

JACOB LAWRENCE PAINTING MISSING FOR DECADES, FOUND BY MET VISITOR

The Metropolitan Museum’s celebrated exhibition “Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle” series, depicting an uprising of American farmers in Massachusetts, has drawn many visitors, but recently one of them had a revelation: She suspected that one of five panels missing from the artist’s original series had been hanging in her neighbors’ Upper West Side apartment for decades. “The painting has been hanging in my living room for 60 years untouched,” one of the painting’s owners said, adding that she bought it with her husband when she was 27. A child of immigrants, the owner said she grew up in the South Bronx and studied Latin and art appreciation — her daughter and granddaughter are both artists. She said she has always loved Lawrence’s work and is happy to share it. “Struggle”. It is on public view at the MET through Nov. 1 and will then travel on loan to venues in Birmingham, Seattle and Washington, D.C., through next fall. Read full NYT story...

STRONGER SISTERHOOD: REPRESENTING INTERSECTIONAL IDENTITY
 NOVEMBER 16

Unbound Visual Arts (Brighton, Mass) calls artists to submit work for a virtual exhibit "Stronger Sisterhood: Representing Intersectional Identity," a virtual on-line exhibition in a 3D 360 degree gallery that explores the multidimensional and intersectional identities of women. Open to current, renewing and new Unbound Visual Arts' members. Art in all media will be considered for this virtual exhibition including 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works such as paintings, sculptures, photographs, collages, drawings, quilts, videos, poetry, recorded performances, stories, etc. Seeking artwork that explores and engages with intersectional identity. Women’s oppression does not end with gender, it intersects with a multitude of characteristics. The recognition and representation of intersectionality invites women of all identities to advocate for equality and a stronger sisterhood. How does your work represent the multitude of your identity, the marginalization or oppression you face because of your identity or the power you exhibit in the face of that oppression? How do women’s experiences differ due to other facets of our identity? How are we made stronger by recognizing and honoring these differences? Where in your experiences have you seen the recognition of intersectional feminism grow and where is there more work to be done?

How can we reimagine the systems that have produced and maintained these public symbols of celebration and oppression?
