Holli Levy is an encaustic artist, incorporating photography and mixed media in many of her pieces. An avid hiker and photographer, her inspiration often comes while outdoors, and her love of nature can be found in her artwork. Holli began her artistic journey with acrylics and mixed media. When she discovered encaustics, she was enthralled by the movement and texture of the medium. A retired elementary school teacher, Holli also shares her love of art through art journaling classes.

ON SOUNDCLOUD SOON!

"GIVING THANKS FOR ARTS SUPPORT IN CONNECTICUT"

In our November “Spotlight on Arts & Culture” we took advantage of the season, and of the recent election results, to give thanks – for the support that the arts and culture sector receives from our state legislature, as well as from individual donors, our local businesses and family foundations. Guests included two recently re-elected legislators, Lucy Dathan, representing Norwalk and New Canaan, and David Michel representing Stamford. They were joined by Brett Thompson, Executive Director of the CT Arts Alliance, the main advocacy body for the arts in Connecticut, and Scott Wands, in Director of Grants & Programs at CT Humanities. Guests reviewed how arts, culture and tourism (ACT) are currently funded in CT, what the impact was of recent post-COVID windfall funding, and how together we can create a plan, or Roadmap, to put ACT funding on a more equitable, sustainable and predictable footing in the future.

Adair Heitmann presented her true story "How Art Saves Lives" during the finale of the Bridgeport Art Trail at PechaKucha Night on November 13 at the Bijou Theatre. This year's theme was "Journeys: How Did We Get Here?" PechaKucha is an online and offline global storytelling platform that celebrates people, passion, and creative thought. Adair joined ten other presenters who shared their unique personal story told in 400 seconds with 20 images. CORRECTION: It was incorrectly reported in October that Adair was part of an exhibition called “Taking A Stand.”

Niki Ketchman's tablets are on exhibit in the November show, "Anomaly" at the Azarian McCullough Art Gallery in New York.
The two tablets pictured here, are acting as one and facing each other. They are further connected by a pink fringe of electrical wire radiating from the pair on the floor. Is this tablet a marker meant to remember or memorialize something or someone? Are the black lines of wire an abstract language written as a message or memory? How in the world could a tablet like this have a pink fringe? It’s an anomaly. As you recall the show is titled Anomaly. Steel rods, aluminum wire, electrical wire, paint. Its 3’h x 50” diameter.

Joanie Landau participated in Open Studios 2022 at the American Fabrics Arts Building in Bridgeport on November 12th and 13th. She showed her piece "From Where I Lie" Version 5 - a worm's eye view of winter trees. She held a Liquid Studio Sale on November 7th. WEBSITE

Nancy Moore won the Juror’s Award at the Connecticut Women Artists National Open Juried Show for "Where Do I Begin.” Juror: Lisa Hayes Williams, Associate Curator at the New Britain Museum of American Art.  WEBSITE

Brad Noble, founder of Art of Everyone, assisted by James Chantler Brown and Mike Vartuli created the "Men in Black" mural at 211 State Street in Bridgeport. The inspiration to design and paint the mural came from the history and relevance surrounding UFO researcher, publisher, and former Bridgeport resident Albert Bender. Bender claimed that he was contacted multiple times by the Men in Black, who demanded that he cease his investigations into UFO research, or suffer the consequences. Bender lived just two blocks from the mural wall on Broad Street. WEBSITE

Rick Shaefer created two public art murals - "Leviathan"
at 1198 Main Street in Bridgeport and "Sunlight on Seascape After Squall" at 179 Middle Street, Bridgeport - as part of the Bridgeport Art Trail. Shaefer shared that his murals play off each other with the ocean in both as a unifying theme. Recognizing the city's history as a sea port and one-time whaling base, he was interested in portraying two historical aspects of the city that are often overlooked. The first was the emergence of a thriving community of African-Americans in what became known as Little Liberia and the second was that Bridgeport was a thriving shipbuilding and whaling center from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth.

The Mark Twain Library is excited to celebrate its 50th Anniversary and the Mark Twain Library Art Show. Ross Fine Art Gallery in Indianapolis, IN. Marc Zaref recently completed a series of ensos - 4 sculptures installed at Canyon Ranch, Lenox, MA (welded steel, enamel 93 x 48 x 26 in) Created specifically for both the environment and its guests, Zaref's invitation to install sculptures began with exploration and observations. The interaction of landscapes and architecture, and how light creates different scenarios throughout the day, introduces a perfect setting for sculpture. The pathways guests travel with seating to relax, socialize or contemplate, and instructional sessions on the lawns, all add to a wonderful energy. WEBSITE

ART IN THE WORKPLACE IMPROVES EMPLOYEE WELL-BEING

It may seem obvious that looking at artwork is less depressing than staring at the sad gray enclosure of your office cubicle, but now, there is research to back it up. A new research study found that for 69% of participants, having “interesting and visually striking art” at the workplace contributes to their well-being.
