ARTISTS' COMMUNITIES 
Our next SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE  discussion - on WPKN 89.5FM - is about three quite different artist groups: The Artists Collective of Westport, The NEST Arts Factory in Bridgeport, and the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. Why do artists band together - why historically and why today? What do these groups do, and what do they do that's different from one another. Are they all about geography - or is there something else that brings them together. Listen as we hear from Miggs Burroughs and Nina Bentley, two co-founders of the Arts Collective of Westport, Jane Davila, Managing Director of the for-profit NEST Arts Factory, and Pam Stoddart, Executive Director of the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. WELCOME NEW MEMBER
LINA MORIELLI

Lina Morielli was born in Montreal, grew up in Darien, and is a graduate of Parsons School of Design. She has been engaged in the local art scene in Stamford since 1987, including being president of Stamford’s Loft Artists Association (LAA) and receiving three City Arts Partnership Program grants to produce LAA's Annual Open Studios and Performance Series. An earlier New York City career ranged widely from designing and editing crafts for Woman’s Day and Family Circle Magazines, to developing craft promotions for the industry (e.g., Better Homes and Gardens’ Christmas Craft Collection, The Kid’s Craft Treasury, and Cynthia Hart’s Scrapbook Memories). Her knit and crochet designs were featured in Vogue Knitting, and McCalls Patterns, among many, and she designed for the Lion Brand Yarn Company and E.I DuPont Craft Center. Lina has created and taught after-school and summer camp art enrichment programs for the I Have a Dream Foundation and the Yerwood Center in Stamford and has offered TV/video production workshops for high school students. She has staged many art workshops, and produced and directed Art in the Community, a video documenting the Stamford art scene. For the past 12 years she has curated art exhibits for the Mayor’s Gallery in Stamford, and for Stamford’s Old Town Hall Museum and was a member of the founding committee for the Art Gallery at UCONN Stamford. Lina's wood and metal assemblages, including her signature wrapped metal hearts, are found in more than 100 private collections across the country, and have been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York and Hartford, as well as locally - at the Bendheim Gallery in Greenwich, 22 Haviland Street Gallery in Norwalk, the Blue Door Gallery in Yonkers and the Upstream Gallery in Dobbs Ferry, NY, among others. Her work is also on permanent display at the State Superior Court House, the Heart Institute, at the Tully Health Center, and the Critical Care unit at Stamford Hospital - all chosen through the Connecticut Commission on the Arts' One Percent for Art program. Her work is on exhibit in the public rooms of the Governor’s Mansion in Hartford, and has been selected for the permanent collections of Yale Medical Center/Bridgeport, the new Stamford Hospital and Sacred Heart University, College of Education and Healthcare. Cris Dam and Rick Reyes are both participating in the upcoming SavorCity:Eat Noodle, Happy Hour, next door to Bridgeport's Bijou Theatre, on Fri. Nov. 9, 5-8pm. Cris will be showing a number of his light paintings. Rick will be playing a variety of Latin and American songs that will prepare the audience for the show at the Bijou he has curated: Latin AmericaNA. To see and hear them, reserve a spot in this very popular event here.

Elizabeth Hasegawa Agresta is participating in the Loft Artists Association's Open Studios this weekend. One of the works in the show is Untitled (2018, oil on anodized aluminum, 30x40, detail at right; click for complete image). The Open Studios event celebrates Loft Artists Association's 40th anniversary in Stamford's South End: Sat. & Sun. Nov. 3-4, 12-5pm.
Nancy Breakstone has a solo exhibition of photographs from her “Impressions In The Sand” series at the Brendan’s 101 gallery in Rowayton Nov. 8-Dec. 4, with an opening reception on Nov. 10, 6-8pm. Pictured here is one of Nancy's photographs titled Peaks In The Sand (digital, 18⅝x 20¼, detail at right).  She will also have one of her photographs showing at the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association All Member show, Nov. 3-29, with an opening reception on Nov. 10, 1-3pm at the Katonah Village Library.
Ann Chernow is participating in “UNLOAD: Aiming for Change,” the exhibition about guns, presented at the newly formed Gallery at the Westport Playhouse, on the campus of the Westport Country Playhouse, opening with a reception Sat. Nov. 3,  6:30-8pm. Ann's piece, is I want to report a Murder….My Own (mixed media on canvas, 20x16). The exhibition, presented by #UNLOAD and the Artists Collective of Westport, will be open from 90 minutes before and during theatre showtime, and is organized in conjunction with Thousand Pines, the current play at the Playhouse, set in the wake of a shooting at Thousand Pines Junior High School. Hours coincide  with  the show at  the Playhouse.    
Dawn Dahl’s oil painting Monarch (2018, oil on ACM board, 20x24, detail at right, click for complete image) will be shown at the American Artists Professional League 90th Grand National Exhibition, which runs from Sunday, November 11 through Monday, November 19 at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, in New York City. Dawn says she was inspired at Deyrolle, an historic taxidermy shop in Paris, where she purchased the butterfly and was seriously tempted by many other wonders of nature.
Cris Dam, in addition to showing work at Eat Noodle, Fri. Nov 9, as part of SavorCity, is having a solo show at Norwalk Community College's Art Gallery East, with an opening reception and artist's talk, Wed. Nov. 7, 6-7:30pm. Cris Dam: Lights On, will debut his large-scale, ground-breaking light paintings as well as a new series of sconces that push beyond traditional boundaries of art and design. Shanna Melton is the writer, director and producer of The MAAFA Legacy ~ Lead Us to the Lighthouse, a program that takes the audience on a journey from Africa, through the middle passage, into slavery and arriving in Black America today. Shanna says: "The Lighthouse is where we recharge, gather, heal from the darkness and prepare to go back in until we find another." The performance is Sat. Nov. 3, 7pm at Mount Aery Baptist Church, 73 Frank St, Bridgeport.
Jay Misencik, who was awarded a 2018 Regional Initiative Grant from the CT Office of the Arts, through a panel process organized by CAFC, for his Bridgeport Portrait Project, will be projecting portraits from the project from Blends Gallery onto a building across Bridgeport's Main Street, as part of the Bridgeport Art Trail on Fri. Nov. 9, 6-8pm. Then Sat. and Sun., Nov. 10-11, 10-5pm, Jay will present the Project at the Am Fab II building, 1313 Connecticut Ave., Room 212 from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Joanie Landau is having a solo show at The Mayor’s Gallery in Stamford titled, Art Doesn’t Have to Match the Sofa: A Digital Art Encounter.” Approximately 25 of Joanie's digital collagraphs will be on display, Nov 1- Jan. 2, at 888 Washington Blvd, 10th floor: weekdays: 9am – 4pm. At right, Paparazzi. Joanie also has work in the Loft Artists Association's Open Studios this weekend, 12-5. 
Katya Lebrija will be exhibiting some of her pieces along with Karen Kent, Claudia Mengel and Jody Peterson,“Different Strokes” at the Byram Shubert Library in Greenwich CT, 21 Mead Avenue, opening with a reception on Saturday, November 10th, 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
Sooo-z Mastropietro has three pieces as part of the mini-exhibit of circle-themed works organized by Read's artist Jodi Strmiska as part of the Bridgeport Art Trail's Artists Choose Artists exhibit opening Thurs. Nov. 8, 5:30-9:30pm. Soo-z pieces are: Impudent Flumpet, Circumstitchin' and Ombrouchure (2015, 24x24, cotton Lycra tubes, at right). The tubes are set on canvas in radial format mimicking the mouth position of reed instrument players. Each individual tube maintains the position of the piece in its totality.
Nancy Moore is having a solo show, The Women, at the Soleil Gallery in Westport, located at Bistro du Soleil, 615 Riverside Avenue, opening Sun. Nov. 4, 5-7pm. At right, Nancy's new painting Nesting (2018, watercolor on paper, 36x30 framed; detail at right, click for complete image) is one of 20 original paintings and signed, limited-edition giclee prints that will be on display. The show, Nancy comments, "is a celebration of women, all perfectly imperfect." 
Dale Najarian has a painting in UNLOAD: Aiming for Change, at Gallery at the Westport Playhouse, opening with a reception Sat. Nov. 3,  6:30-8pm. Dale's piece, Hands Up, (2018, oil on canvas, 24x36; click for larger image) refers to the instruction “Keep your HANDS UP" that children are given when they are fleeing from a school during a mass shooting. Dale comments: Safer gun laws and mental health awareness should be addressed hand in hand. This work of Dale's is also part of her ongoing "shadows" series.  
Gregg Welz has work from his Papercuts series as part of the mini-exhibit of circle-themed works organized by Read's artist Jodi Strmiska as part of the Bridgeport Art Trail's Artists Choose Artists exhibit opening Thurs. Nov. 8, 5:30-9:30pm. Gregg has written "Paper Cuts explore the grid by moving the medium into repetitive configurations of shape, color and cast shadows.  As a conceptual artist, I am influenced by the geometry of the environment, both natural and man-made.  Surrounded by found objects and ephemera in my work space, I create the patterns that mimic my imagination."
Jennifer Williams is currently exhibiting three paintings at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Westchester, as part of a partnership between MSK Westchester and Arts Westchester to bring the talent of local artists to the beautiful facility to enhance and bring a new dimension into patient care. The exhibition is located in the Chemo Sub Waiting area on the Concourse level and in the Reception Area on the Lower Concourse.  Jennifer’s painting Shoreline Serenity (2018, oil on brushed silver aluminum, 36 x36, detail at right; click for larger image) is of sea grasses on the CT shoreline.

HOW ARTISTS ARE MOBILIZING BEFORE THE ELECTIONS

In an article Friday, Caroline Goldstein writes on ArtNet how, in the two years of Trump's administration, the art news cycle has included the political, from "the new tax laws and tariffs that have a ripple-effect on the secondary market and international dealings to the phenomenon of social-media based movements like #MeToo and #BlackLives Matter being channeled into visual and performance-based artworks." She reports on some of the activity around the country from Jeffrey Deitch donating his gallery space as a ground zero for a week-long “Protest Factory” for community members to engage with artists in advance of the elections, to the continuing work of For Freedoms, co-founded by the artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, who recently unveiled the more than 300 artists participating in its nationwide “50 State Initiative” billboard project, which have cropped up along highways and in barren parking lots with striking messages meant to encourage not just simple awareness but action. WHAT IF MORE ARTISTS RAN FOR CITY COUNCIL?

Jackie Lightfield of Norwalk 2.0 and the Stamford partnership recently pointed out an an Oct. 5 blog post in Next City recounting the story of one artist's exasperated run for the city council. The artist, Giovanni Valderas, started placing small piñata houses around building sites and vacant lots in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood. The houses are meant to recall the area’s Latino residents who are being priced out. He told the Dallas Morning News about how, since placing the houses and doing a few other artistic projects around the issue, his neighbors began asking him what’s next. “I wish more artists ran for office, because they are often the most creative problem-solvers,”  Valderas told the News. “We know how to run a shoestring budget. Through art, we already know how to engage and motivate people. This city could benefit from more creative people running. We can’t leave it up to developers and business people who are all about the money aspect of things. Imagine how much a community could change with an artist at the helm. There would be some crazy ideas, but it would be pretty fantastic.” See story here.
Americans for the Arts research shows that those who participate in the arts are 20% more likely to vote than those who do not. Nina Ozlu Tunceli (director of AftA's Arts Action Fund reminds us that results very often depend on turn-out - so as an artist you are more likely to vote than others - but are you working to persuade others to turn out on Tuesday? She advises us all to go out of our way to get more of our family, friends, and social media followers to vote on Election Day! And Vote smART!

34th ANNUAL OUTDOOR CRAFTS FESTIVAL

The Bruce Museum's 34th Annual Outdoor Crafts Festival will take place May 18-19, 2019, 10am-5pm, and artists and artisans are invited to submit an application by Nov. 15, 2018. The purpose of the show is to foster and increase an appreciation of unique, handmade crafts. The first standard in judging submissions is innovative and contemporary excellence of work to be exhibited, both in design and execution.
Entries are classified in categories and juried by persons who are working professionals and/or teachers in any of those categories. A total maximum of 80 exhibitors will be selected from the top entrants in each category to form a balanced show. Cash prizes for First, Second and Third in each category will be awarded by professional judges who are authorities in the field of crafts. Categories are as follows: Ceramics/Pottery; Fiber; Glass; Jewelry; Leather; Metal; Mixed Media; Paper; Stone; Wood. A craftsperson may enter a maximum of two categories, but separate sets of images and descriptions of working processes are required for each category. Entrants are required to send five images of good quality, showing 4 different samples of current work. The Barrett Art Center Poughkeepsie, NY, is issuing a call for Photowork, an annual exhibition (Feb. 9 – March 23, 2019) of contemporary photographs, curated from entries across the United States. James A. Ganz, Senior Curator of Photography at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, is this year’s juror. The show embraces reinvention, wherein artists provide a juxtaposition of traditional styles and cutting-edge practices in dynamic imagery. The show celebrates photography’s role as fine art and prescient social commentary. $500 Juror’s Prize, $200 Second Prize, $125 Honorable Mention. Winners in the past have spanned the gamut of photographic output from small to large format cameras, pinhole cameras, silver gelatin prints, pigment prints, chromogenic prints, and everything in between. Entries may be 2D or 3D. 2-dimensional works cannot exceed 72" on any side; 3-dimensional works must fit within a parameter of 60x30x24".  Entry fees: $35 for the first three images plus $5 for each additional image.

The Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, has a call for an international portraiture exhibition: Similitude. Works selected will represent some point of view relative to this theme. Recognition matters. Throughout art history the ability of the artist to not only capture a likeness but also the character and spirit, if you will, of the subject has defined whole careers. With this in mind we offer this call to artists for works that address the portrait. All manner of interpretations, explorations, and machinations involving the portrait are welcome. Artists are encouraged to take a broadly creative view of the theme.
 This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type or style of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual, abstract, or experimental. The only criteria beyond excellent quality (image/ presentation) is that works must qualify as being clearly related to, qualified as, or about portraiture. $40 for up to three entries submitted. $10 per each additional entry. INTERNATIONAL DRAWING EXHIBITION

As part of an ongoing commitment to promote drawing practices in the visual arts, the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNC Asheville) invites artists to submit entries to a Juried International Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing. UNC Asheville seeks to examine drawing as it is practiced and defined by today’s artists. Such an exhibition will demonstrate the continued significance of drawing through both conventional and innovative methods. Accepted work will be exhibited in the Holden Gallery on the campus of Warren Wilson College Jan. 18 - Feb. 22, 2019.  Esteemed juror, Claire Gilman, Chief Curator at The Drawing Center in New York City, will be present and open the exhibition with a lecture about her role with the practice of contemporary drawing on Jan. 18, 2019, 5-6pm. A full-color catalogue of the exhibition will be printed. $2,000 in cash prizes, as chosen in person by the Juror, will be awarded at the opening reception. Media is open to any traditional or experimental drawing media welcoming both two or three-dimensional works, video and/or installation. Size is open to works that can fit through a standard set of double doors, 10’3” ceiling height and up to 42’ for both floor and wall space. The Onassis Cultural Center, announces a new Artists-in-Residence program, starting in 2019, which offers time to learn, to change, or go deeper, without striving for the production of a final outcome/creation, but rather focusing on the creative process itself. All participants can interact with each other as peers, regardless of age or accomplishments. The idea is to build a community that has the ability to pause and rethink how we function and creates. Onassis AiR will support: Greek and international artists, curators, and thinkers working in time-based artistic disciplines, who wish to deepen, reconsider, or transform their practice or methodology, without the expectations and constraints of a production. There are three strands for non-Greek artists:
Critical Practices Program: a full-time, 3-month encounter of 5 practitioners living and working in Greece, designed as a collective artistic research community of time-based professionals (visual artists, choreographers, theatre and film directors, composers, performers, curators, producers, designers, writers, cultural theorists, and other curious minds).
Curator & Artist-in-Residence Program: a one-month, artistic research residency for any artist, curator or other time-based practitioner with a concrete artistic research question or project. 
Emergency Fellowships: intended for international and local artists, curators, and other practitioners as a stimulus to those who have a unique, unanticipated, and very time-sensitive need. Click here for details.

Marble House Project is a multi-disciplinary artist residency program that fosters collaboration & the exchange of ideas by providing an environment for artists across disciplines to live and work side by side. Marble House Project accepts some 56 artists from the U.S. and abroad. Each session hosts eight artists and is carefully curated to bring together a group of creative workers across various disciplines, who might collaborate and learn from one another. Applications are accepted in all creative fields, including but not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition and performance.  There are six sessions, each lasting for three weeks from mid-April through the end of October.  Each session has 8 artists, creating small, dynamic, interactive groups. Residents are selected by a jury process composed of past-years artist residents, staff and outside experts.  Artists are selected based on the quality and commitment to their work and their project description. Each session is specifically curated to maximize the art residency experience for each individual artist. The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development is recruiting for an Arts & Culture Administrator position. This is a unique management position suitable for a creative individual who has a passion for the arts, culture or preserving the historic assets of Connecticut. The incumbent is accountable for strengthening the state's cultural and historic-preservation community to foster the awareness and growth of Connecticut's historic and cultural assets in support of other agency initiatives that will promote economic and community development. Duties will include: Oversee over $70 million dollars of annual funding; manage the operation of four state museums; manage the State Historic Preservation Office; manage the Office of the Arts; finish the Sandy Disaster Recovery effort relating to historic preservation (an additional $5 million of funding over the past 5 years); manage place-making and innovation efforts, combining economic development with art/culture in our urban areas; oversee grants and tax credit programs and manage relationships with state and federal stakeholders. Travel is required. Experience required includes: Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques; considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; knowledge of arts and culture; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; ability to successfully coordinate arts and culture projects; ability to facilitate cooperation and partnership between various stakeholders. The global arts community knows the museum not only for our peerless collections but also as a place of engaging programming.   Dynamic and varied special exhibitions have captured the public’s interest for nearly a century, enriching the conversation about the art of the past and the art of today.  An active acquisitions program and generous patrons have enabled the Wadsworth’s collections to grow from the original core group of 87 paintings to more than 50,000 high-quality works of art representing a broad range of cultures—from Mediterranean antiquity to now. We are currently inviting applications for the position of Curatorial Administrator and Assistant. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of curatorial and administrative tasks including managing contacts and correspondence; providing trustee committee support; budget tracking; assisting with the coordination of didactic materials and exhibition documentation; writing and editing curatorial-related copy; and occasional collection research. Attention  to detail, follow-through and the ability to collegially problem solve are key attributes. The successful candidate will have attained a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in art, art history or museum studies. Master’s level study is desirable. Three (3) to five (5) years administrative experience or two (2) years of museum experience couple with strong administrative skills is required. Candidates who have work experience (paid or intern) in an arts institution will move to the top of the list for consideration.
