"Still, there is a feeling of disconnect and isolation as well as concern that the arts, having fed the souls of humanity throughout Civilization, will be limited and no longer as accessible or available.”

FORBES FAVORITES 2020: THE YEAR'S BEST ARTS STORIES

William Shakespeare famously wrote King Lear during the bubonic plague, but what art and culture will we remember from the COVID-19 pandemic? Yes, binge-watching Tiger King made the first few months a little more tolerable—much as having The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit helped transport audiences to a more glamorous era this fall. And a workplace scandal involving Ellen DeGeneres and the mass humiliation of conservative commentator Ben Shapiro temporarily distracted us. But will any of those moments resonate in the decades ahead? More likely, some of the art inspired by the death of George Floyd will have a lasting impact. And who knows how many more metal monoliths will be left for us by artists—or aliens? Here are some of the best and most-read arts stories of 2020.
UNCOVERING THE LOST WORKS OF FEMALE RENAISSANCE ARTISTS

Florence is one of the main stops on any art lover's European itinerary. At the Uffizi Galleries, visitors can have their fill of works by Renaissance masters Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Of course, none of these artists are women. In 2009, a new nonprofit foundation in Florence started to investigate why. In the years since, AWA has shed light on a forgotten part of the art world, identifying some 2,000 works by women artists that had been gathering dust in Italy's public museums and in damp churches. It has also financed the restoration of 70 works spanning the 16th to the 20th centuries. Full npr piece...
