WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Mark Andreas is a sculptor and educator whose work explores the changing role of time, handcraft, nature and it’s impact on the present day human experience.  Andreas’s artistic approach is informed by his background as a boat builder, sailer craftsperson and love of nature.  Andreas has lectured, taught and given workshops at Yale University and other universities across the nation. He has exhibited his art work both nationally and internationally and sculpture stands as public art in Peekskill New York, Stockholm Sweden, Kobe Japan, and Ireland in the Winter of 2023.  WEBSITE

Amy Kahn Russell is a mosaic and glass artisan as well as a painter who has made her mark with rare and collectible jewelry designs. She received a Bachelor degree in Fine Art and later had the unique opportunity to travel the world. She has been influenced by the cultures of the East. While living in Hong Kong, she managed a pearl company, and when she returned to the US, she started her Amy Kahn Russell line, adding in rare finds from her travels. WEBSITE

"SYMPHONIC CHANGES"


In our next "Spotlight on Arts & Culture" on WPKN FM we talk to the leaders of four of the prestigious orchestras in our region about the changes happening with the orchestras. Meet Mark Halstead, Executive Director of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony, Russell Jones, President & CEO of Orchestra Lumos, Stuart Malina, Music Director of The Greenwich Symphony, and Jonathan Yates, Music Director of the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra.


The Greater Bridgeport Symphony is auditioning conductors for its new Music Director, Orchestra Lumos, formerly the Stamford Symphony found its new Music Director, Michael Stern in 2019, and the Greenwich Symphony recently selected its new Music Director in Stuart Malina. Jonathan Yates has been Music Director at the Norwalk Symphony since 2011.


All have been battling the impact of COVID and seeking new audiences through a variety of approaches. Learn how these symphonies are coping in the new cultural landscape and what is inspiring these leaders in the field.

Nina Bentley received a 2022 Community Service Award from The Rotary Club in recognition for her outstanding service to the city of Westport. She states "I've been a cheerleader all my life. In 1957, I was kicked off the cheerleading squad for smoking in uniform, but I've been cheering ever since and i was very pleased to be given this recognition." WEBSITE

Nancy Breakstone’s photograph “Changing” (digital, 18” x 16) was awarded first place in the 2022 Easton Photography Contest, Nov. 9 - Jan. 6. She also had one of her photographs juried into the Blue Mountain Gallery “2023 Winter Juried Exhibition” Jan. 3 - 28, with an opening reception on Jan. 5, 5 - 8pm in New York. She has also partnered with Ron Lake in Lake Gallery Fine Art Photography and there will be a Gallery Grand Opening reception on Dec 16 6 - 8 pm. WEBSITE

Dolly Curtis, Easton artist and supporter of artists, was recognized for “her exemplary contribution to the field of visual arts” by the Connecticut Art Education Association. Curtis received the Distinguished Service to the Profession Award during the 2022 CAEA holiday/awards celebration at the New Britain Museum of American Art on Dec. 3rd. Curtis is a well-known textile artist and supporter of artists in various disciplines. She arranges and curates shows at the Easton Public Library and is an active member the

Jane Davila and her studio were featured in the Winter issue of "Where Women Create" magazine. Jane is a freelance artist, writer, author, editor, designer, and founder of Metro Art Studios. You can find her beautiful studio at 345 Railroad Avenue in Bridgeport. WEBSITE

Carla Goldberg is in a new show in Taipei Taiwan called "Obsessive Sea 3rd Iteration" at Serendipity Art Space through December 29th. Carla Goldberg is a mixed media artist whose multiple series of drawings, paintings and sculpture all approach the subject of water in motion. Hallmarks of her work include resin on transparent acrylic panels and the use of light and shadow projected onto the wall behind her artworks giving a definite sense of 3-dimentionality. WEBSITE

Julie Leff and Charles Douthat will have a two-person show called “Colors” at the Wilton Public Library from January 2 through January 30. Opening reception is Friday, January 6th, 6-6:30pm. WEBSITE

Emily Teall is excited to work from her new studio at Ice Cream Social in Port Chester, NY. Ice Cream Social's gallery space opens to the public in March, but Emily welcomes private studio visitors before that time. Emily also continues to actively participate in the Norwalk Art Space community, where two of her large installation artworks are sited in the outdoors sculpture garden and in the spiral stairwell.

Brian Whelan has a new publication out with 74 reproductions of Public Personas, where he answers questions from good friend, Ron Rendell, about his depictions of the human face.

Jarvis Wilcox will be a guest exhibitor at The Westport Book Shop for the month of December at the Book Shop’s Drew Friedman Art Place. Jarvis is exhibiting seven of his small oil paintings featuring nature, landscapes and still life. He studied art history at Yale University and Columbia University; and studied painting with his mentor Arthur Stern. Jarvis painted in upstate New York for a decade, and then in the Hamptons for 25 years. He now resides in Westport, and his artwork will be on exhibit at the Book Shop through December 31st.

The Connecticut Arts Hero Awards honor and celebrate Connecticut residents who are doing inspiring things in, for, or through the arts in Connecticut. Since 2016, the Connecticut Arts Hero Awards have introduced an array of remarkable individuals engaged in or supporting the arts - some publicly and some behind the scenes. The Awards are presented at a free event, open to the public.

NEMA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DAN YAEGER STEPPING DOWN


New England Museum Association (NEMA) Executive Director Dan Yaeger is stepping down from the organization after leading it through more than a decade of expansion and change. During his twelve-year tenure, NEMA grew to become the country’s largest regional museum association with programs and services that extend well beyond the region’s borders.

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE ACCEPTING AN ART COMMISSION


It’s easy to become swept away in the flattery, but there is a lot to keep in mind before accepting a commission. Knowing what questions to ask before you accept a commission can help you avoid any potentially stressful or less-than-desirable situations.
