HARRY L. GREEN

Harry L. Green was employed in the corporate world of banking, telecommunications, and the aircraft industry, with an undergraduate degree in management/finance and an MBA in finance. He currently has a solo show at the Easton Public Library (reception Th. With each canvas, I try to depict and capture a certain serenity, attainment, cooperation, blissfulness and beauty of creation."
I AM VERNICE

Vernice Holmes is "a sparkly, Christian Jewish, Black White Girl from the Bronx with green eyes and white skin. My inspiration flows from my ethnicity, experiences and memories of people asking me "What am I"? As a young girl, I sketched ‘fashion girls’ of all colors, shapes and sizes on paper, walls and clothing to express myself. When I was teased about my skin color or having “kinky hair”, my art fueled my passion to be original on purpose.” Vernice. Today, Vernice is the Creative Director of Vernice’s Arte where she draws from her diversity that is vividly reflected in her whimsical-childlike process of creating art and innovative artistic platforms. For 25 years she has been inspiring and challenging young girls and women to discover their true identity through her mentorship and her Multi-Media Symposia. As an fashion designer for Macy's, Nordstrom's, Dillard's, Neiman Marcus and several specialty store chains across the country, Vernice has traveled from Europe to the Far East shopping for the newest trends & styles to create her own artisan collections. Vernice’s art is available as canvas art, apparel & accessories, face masks, prints, posters & pretty gifts.  See her "Pop Up Shoppe" at The Sono Collection in Norwalk, CT. THE WRONG TIME TO CUT ARTS EDUCATION

In times of great financial strain and uncertainty, arts education is often the first thing cut from the school curriculum. Indeed, several school districts across the New England have already laid off teachers and arts educators in the face of expected budget cuts and an unpredictable fall. Some districts may be anticipating a stricter focus on tested subjects when schools reopen to get students up to speed, but this is exactly the wrong time to be cutting arts programs. With an ongoing global pandemic and heightened attention on racial injustice, students need arts education more than ever. The arts help students creatively engage with their classmates and communities, help combat isolation, and allow students to process their feelings and express themselves in ways that help them make sense of what’s happening in the world. Full article...
LANDMARK STUDY REVEALS VALUE OF THE ARTS IN COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE

In a landmark report commissioned by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and conducted by the Urban Institute finds that people with access to arts and cultural amenities are more deeply attached to their communities, but equitable access continues to be challenging for communities of color. Conducted before COVID-19, Community Ties: Understanding What Attaches People to the Place Where They Live, draws upon a rich dataset on community attachment from a survey of 11,000 Americans in 26 metro areas across the country. “During the pandemic and movement for racial justice, we’ve seen local artists both giving voice to the experiences of communities and sparking meaningful conversations through the arts,” said Victoria Rogers, Knight’s vice president of the Arts program. “Community Ties shows that arts and cultural activities foster more engaged communities, but more work needs to be done to make access to them more equitable.”  Full Community Ties Study...

NINE THINGS YOU SHOULD GIVE UP TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST

As artists, we are often told to take every opportunity that comes our way. You never know who could be in attendance at that next gallery opening, what connections you will find at that event, or what could lead to future opportunities. But, sometimes, it’s less about saying “yes” and more about knowing what’s ok to give up. Habits, as you likely know if you were ever a nail-biter, can be incredibly hard to break. The invisible mental habits of ours can be even more difficult to overcome, but because of this, even more important. So, give yourself permission to quit these things. And, give yourself the time and patience to break the habits.  Read more...
WEBINAR: WHAT'S THE FORECAST FOR ARTS EDUCATION?
AUGUST 18

Join Grantmakers in the Arts  on Aug. 18 for a webinar hosted by Kimberly Olsen, executive director, NYC Arts in Education Roundtable, and Alex Nock, principal, Penn Hill Group, as they discuss federal funding changes, how funders can respond, and what teaching artists are doing to assimilate into this new reality. As a result of COVID-19, students and families have pivoted to work packets, online learning, and virtual convenings. This has proven to be a very difficult transition for many. For teaching artists and arts funders in particular, there are outstanding questions around how to handle contracts, manage intellectual property, and how to ensure all students have access to high quality education. Save your spot...
