e. white is a multi-media artist whose connection to the natural world and desire for harmony with her surroundings has been a motivating force in her artistic practice. Her sculptural work ranges from ephemeral to concrete using natural and found objects, cement, and sometimes video. Themes often reflect environmental or social concerns. WEBSITE

Eric Jiaju Lee is a critically acclaimed artist and graduate of the prestigious MFA program at Hunter College. He exhibits extensively in the US and abroad with his work belonging to numerous international private and corporate collections. The recipient of multiple awards and honors, Lee has been a professor of fine arts for over two decades and is an independent curator and guest lecturer at museums and institutions. Lee is also the Associate Director of Sorokin Gallery in Greenwich. WEBSITE

LEVITT PAVILION & OTHER GREAT FREE SUMMER VENUES


The August WPKN Community Radio 89.5FM SPOTLIGHT ON ARTS & CULTURE is now available as podcast via SoundCloud, featuring some of the great free concert series in our region. Our main focus was on the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts, Westport. For almost 50 years, this community-based, magical performance space has welcomed performing artists from all genres. Our Executive Director David Green interviewed Freda and Carleigh Welsh, the driving forces behind The Pavilion and its commitment to creating a strong community through music and the other performing arts. We also heard from Bennie Wallace, renowned saxophonist with BackCountry Jazz, who created the #GreenwichJazzFestival, and from Paul Frucht, Artistic Director of the CharlesIvesMusicFestival.

ARTS & ECONOMIC PROSPERITY 6


The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County is pleased and honored to announce that we are partnering again with Americans for the Arts for Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), the sixth national study of the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry. Our local nonprofit arts and culture organizations have been and will continue to be critical to our economic recovery. This new study will give us the data we need to prove the arts and culture continue to mean business in Fairfield County! Nancy Breakstone's photograph Rainy Day Gardenia (digital, 35” x 36”) won a Bronze Award in Camelback Gallery Flower Power 2022 International Juried Visual Arts Exhibition for the month of July. She also has a photograph in the Marin Society of Artists All About Women 2022 Juried Online Exhibition, July 24 through Oct. 1. WEBSITE EMAIL 

Lauren Clayton, an artist and graphic designer from Stamford, recently created two murals in downtown Stamford with family and friends. "The City that Works, Is Now Playing" The murals, a project of Stamford Downtown, lay on the grounds of the newly redesigned Kiwanis Park. WEBSITE INSTAGRAM

Jana Ireijo is honored to take part in South Norwalk's Eco Evolution's inaugural exhibition, along with artists Day Moore and Dale Najarian. She will be exhibiting her Mermaid Disco Ball paintings which are inspired by the following lines in Amanda Gorman's "Ode to Our Ocean" poem: "To stand up for our ocean, Is to stand up for our own ship. The sea is a restless, strong collective of many pieces. So are we." Along with acrylics, Jana's paintings are created with wildfire charcoal, earth pigments, and water sourced from the Long Island Sound.

Dale Najarian is part of the Eco Evolution "Ode to Our Ocean" exhibit inspired by Amanda Gorman’s poem Along with Jana Ireijo and Day Moore, the three artists are activists for the environment and have worked on the Vanishing Murals Project. They have created murals locally and in other parts of the world to bring awareness to climate change, pollution of our waters and deforestation affected the wildlife populations.

Justin Perlman is currently exhibiting his mixed media work Icarus in the group exhibition titled Sculpture in Motion at the National Sculpture Society Gallery, located at 6 East 39th St Suite 903, New York, New York. The exhibition is on view until Sept 30th. WEBSITE

Barbara Ringer won an honorable mention with her piece Regularly Scheduled Program  17” x 21” x 2.5”  hanging in the Photography and Sculpture Show at Rowayton Arts Center, on the wall until August 28th. She also had a piece accepted in the Five Points Small Works Exhibition in Torrington, juried by Douglas Hyland, that opens with a reception on August 20, 6-8pm. Barbara will have several pieces in the Artists Collective of Westport pop up, opening reception Wednesday, September 7 and closing with artist talks on September 10th.

Barbara Ringer had artwork in Kehler Liddell Gallery’s Lost/Found exhibition (Hide and Seek shown here) in New Haven and exhibited in the Silvermine Guild Summer Salon in August.

Emily Teall is excited to begin working from and receiving studio visitors at her new studio at Ice Cream Social in Port Chester, NY. Although Emily's residency at the Norwalk Art Space has ended, she will remain involved and active in the Norwalk Art Space community. Emily will display her work in the upcoming Spectrum exhibition as part of a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood through the Serious Fun Arts Festival She will also display work alongside other Ice Cream Social artists at the Ely Center in New Haven this September. Sherri Wolfgang is currently in two exhibits with two paintings from her NEW series, Grounded/Ungrounded. They are being debuted at the same time in 2 different George Billis Gallery galleries. Wonder Women is shown here, and 15% of the proceeds of this painting will be donated to REACH. The REACH Fund of CT is a non profit organization to reduce barriers to abortion care in Connecticut by providing financial assistance. WEBSITE

NOMINATE YOUR ARTS HERO


The Connecticut Arts Hero Awards honor and celebrate Connecticut residents who are doing inspiring things in, for, or through the arts in Connecticut. Since 2016, the Connecticut Arts Hero Awards have introduced us to an array of remarkable individuals engaged in or supporting the arts - some publicly and some behind the scenes. Deadline to submit a nomination is Wednesday, September 21st.

VOLUNTEER LAWYERS FOR THE ARTS


Great news! CT Office of the Arts is implementing a VLA service program for the arts sector across Connecticut. Services include: copyright and trademark, contract negotiations, wills, real estate and more.

HOW TO WRITE A STRONG GRANT APP


Your words represent you, your point of view, and ultimately tell the story of why your work should be supported.With limited time to designate to writing grant applications, how can you make the most of your time and energy? This post, informed by the expertise of Kelly Olshan, Program Officer, NYFA Learning, with additional insights from Mollie Quinlan-Hayes, Sarah O’Connell, and Anna Wang of the NYFA Grants team, delves into the grant process.

TACKLE CREATIVE BLOCK


If you’re an artist of any discipline, you are surely well-acquainted with creative block. You may dread its coming at times, and appreciate its ability to challenge you to improve or innovate at others. Many factors can cause the blank state of creative block, including: exhaustion, a temporary lack of confidence in your ideas, or simply what many describe as the natural ebb and flow of creativity. Whatever the cause, here is advice from a range of multidisciplinary artists in NYFA’s community to help you beat, harness, or simply sit with and accept creative block.

Artists Unite! This national public art movement is a collaboration with Artists For Peace. Join hands and show the world what collective creative energy can do by participating in a movement to inspire peace. This project has two main components: 1 - A wing-themed art piece that will evolve over the course of months and 2 - An incorporated message that is revealed one word at a time. GCTYO AUDITIONS

AUG 27 - SEPT 1


Registration is open for the 2022-23 Season. Students in grades 5-12 who play orchestral or band instruments are eligible to audition to be placed in one of the GCTYO developmentally appropriate orchestras and Jazz Orchestras.

Current members must also audition each year. Students may also register for the Steel Pan program, but no audition or experience is necessary for Steel Pan. The first day of 2022-23 season is September 10, 2022.

CT WOMEN ARTISTS NATIONAL JURIED EXHIBITION 2022

Connecticut Women Artists, Inc. (CWA) calls women artists to submit work to be showcased in a broad range of styles and media. Galleries and museums hosting the exhibition are chosen from among Connecticut's most well-known and respected art venues. This year, the exhibition is held at West Hartford Art League's prestigious West Hartford galleries.This year's Juror of Selection and Awards is Lisa Hayes Williams, Associate Curator at the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain. The gala opening reception and awards ceremony is held on October 22, 2-4 pm.

ROWAYTON ARTS CENTER "AUTUMN JURIED SHOW" EXHIBITION

DEADLINE SEPT 2


This new open theme, all media exhibit at the Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) will be on view October 9 - November 5. Judge is Kimberly Henrikson, the Executive Director at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT as well as the President of the Print Club of New York and the editor for the International Print Club Societies newsletter. Categories include oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor, mixed media, color photography, black and white photography, sculpture, printmaking, pastels or drawing.

The Loft Artists Association, in collaboration with The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, presents a classically inspired and contemporary celebration of the human face and figure with the exhibition of over 50 original paintings, drawings and sculptures. Awards Reception Opening /CSOPA 20-year Anniversary Celebration Saturday, Oct 8 (4-6pm).

NAHM POSTER COMPETITION

Calling all artists! Celebrate National Arts & Humanities Month by entering the #NAHM 2022 Poster Competition. The top three posters will receive cash prizes, and the winner will have their art featured as part of NAHM all October long! The theme is “Championing the Creative Spirit.”

YOUNG ARTS NATIONAL ARTS COMPETITION

Do you know a visual, literary or performing artist between the ages of 15–18 or in grades 10–12? Encourage them to apply to YoungArts and they could receive cash awards; mentorship by accomplished artists; a lifetime of creative and professional support; a peer network of distinguished artists; and a nomination for U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

ARTIST FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

This program provides recognition and funding support for Connecticut artists to pursue new work and advance their artistic careers, recognizing three (3) grant designations with award recognition determined during the review process: Artistic Excellence grants: $5,000, Artist Fellowship grants: $3,000, Emerging Recognition grants: $1,000. COA will provide a virtual Zoom information session on September 14, 2022 at 4:00pm. Register for the session here:
