History tells us a speakeasy used to operate in the basement of the now Barfield Hotel in Downtown Amarillo during prohibition. There’s a side door at the Barfield Hotel off 6th Ave. Look to your left for the staircase, and head down. You can only imagine the Western art deco vibe the Recreation Club would have had, and the unique drinks they would have served. A restored cigarette machine from the era still sits down there. While it doesn’t dispense any cigarettes, we’d recommend giving the Paramount Cigarette lever a pull — especially if you’re thirsty. |
