| I promised some sneak peeks, so here are a few pieces from our second chapter, "Self-Knowledge." Please hit REPLY with your thoughts and answers. :)
As he watched little Lewis’s surprise at the enthusiastic reaction to his failure, I thought about how hard I’d worked to change my generational story with him. I’d made a very clear distinction between his essential worth and lovability, and his choices and actions.
“Aaron, what do you think Lewis learned by the end of this movie?”
“Keep moving forward!” he exclaimed, hands up in the air in declaration.
“When Lewis failed in the beginning of the movie, how did he feel?” I asked.
“Bad. He looked really sad and worried,” Aaron answered, still exasperated.
“Right, it kinda looked like he wasn’t sure if he would ever get it right. But then how about at the end of the movie?” I asked.
“Well, the Robinsons cheered when he failed, so I think he felt better about it.”
“Right. They were all scientists or inventors themselves and knew that to build anything, you have to try and fail and try and fail and try again until you get it right.”
“Makes sense.” He nodded.
“It reminds me of how you changed your thinking the other night with the Uno game.”
“Which one?” he asked, head cocked to the side.
“You know, the one where you thought you had us whooped?”
“Oh yeah…” He scrunched his nose and looked down at his hands and then smiled widely. He knew he’d figured something out that night.
Self-Knowledge What did you learn about success and failure from your favorite childhood movies, tv series, and books, and what do those discoveries indicate about who you are?
When I think about the stories I was engaging during my early childhood, I see characters who didn’t set out to be heroes and who didn’t really see themselves as “special” in any way. They were simply thrust into the Unknown and onto the path of Self-Knowledge (and self-acceptance). Two of them—Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and Atreyu (Neverending Story)—were given physical objects to help or protect them on their journeys. Those ruby red slippers and that medallion were believed to be the source of their power or protection; but by the end of the stories, we see that they “had the power [within them] all along.” Their journey led them to discovering who they really were and that their true power was inside of them. Then there was Ren (Footloose), whose superpowers were his desire to dance and share the experience with everyone else, and the curiosity and compassion that helped him understand his antagonists and eventually build a bridge of understanding and acceptance.

Who is your favorite character right now, or of all time, and why?
One of our favorite things to do is talk about our favorite characters and wonder WHY.
We just watched a series that had a character that surprised us at every turn with her fierce nature and don’t-give-a-shit-what-anyone-thinks actions.
We both agreed that we loved her but weren’t sure we should, and eventually realized that maybe the reason we loved her so much is because it was so easy for her to create and hold boundaries, which is something we were both working on in our relationships and businesses.
Yes, we actually want you to hit REPLY and answer! :) |
