| This part always makes me think of my work, I mused as I watched Harry Potter discover and wonder at his first invitation to Hogwarts.
And just like that, before we can even open the invitation and see what’s inside, some greedy character or demanding situation tears it right out of our hands. I rolled my eyes when the bratty boy handed the envelope to his dad who promptly dispensed of it.
But The Magic [call it God, the Universe, your Higher Self, the Evolutionary Impulse, etc.] doesn’t give up on us. It keeps sending invitations in larger quantities and more dramatic ways, knowing that there is a force [call it the Devil, Ego, the Survival Mechanism, etc.] doing everything within its power to keep us from upsetting our status quo by discovering our true nature and saying YES to the invitation to learn, train, and become more than we think we are in this moment.
I grinned as I watched the fear-crazed uncle rip up and burn envelopes, seal the mail slot shut, and eventually be pummeled by hundreds of invitations flying through the door. Yep, I know how that feels! But then I noticed something I hadn't before -- he actually held onto Harry to keep him from opening the invitations as it happened.
And just like that, instead of the greedy character or demanding situation intercepting, distracting, or destroying the invitation, it redirects its energy to literally holding us down and back from opening the many invitations now scattered all around us.
Sipping on my hot drink, dozens of messengers’ faces and their stories floated through my mind while I watched Hagrid give that greedy kid a pig’s tail and rescue our young hero-in-the-making.
Those who heard the whispers during their quiet time.
Those who saw how their experience could help others.
Those who realized they could grow their business.
Those whose mentors and friends relentlessly insisted they share their story.
Those who asked a question and immediately downloaded answers.
And then I thought about all the ways their invitations were intercepted, distracted, or sabotaged.
The unexpected loss of loved ones or businesses.
The physical symptoms and illness.
The relationship ruptures.
The financial fallouts.
The paralyzing self-doubt, second-guessing, and lack of support from others.
These invitations to be more of who we truly are and contribute our talents and messages appear to be arriving in our world often, especially during certain seasons.
And in my opinion, it’s waaaaaay more fun to answer an invitation than to conjure up and work toward a mind-created goal.
In fact, as I reflected on 2020 and let my mind wander into possibilities for 2021, I was clear about ONLY one thing:
No more goals or resolutions that I generate with my mind. I want to TUNE IN for AN INVITATION.
I’ve achieved a lot of goals over the last decade-plus in my business.
Some of those achievements were the result of pursuing goals that I conjured with my mind, and others were the direct result of me saying YES to an invitation.
And, having experienced both of these pathways to goal achievement, there is no question for me that one is far easier and more enjoyable than the other.
Here are my current thoughts about WHY this is the case…

| | So, what are those invitations lying at your feet, scattered around your office in journals and post-it notes, demanding your attention?
And what are the forces that seem to be trying to intercept, distract from, or completely sabotage your RSVP to The Magic?
I know that these invitations are often a lot more complex than “You are invited to be a student at Howarts where there are teachers, mentors, and experts waiting to help you.”
Sometimes, it’s just a whisper or a fuzzy vision of a possible future…
Other times, it’s a high-definition vision with a next step already presented…
The former is easier to put on the proverbial back-burner while we attend to the more urgent demands in our lives, but they don’t stop coming…
