At first the title sounds like we’re pitting two things against each other that shouldn’t be. But the contrast hints at a very important starting point: How is God pleased? Either He’s pleased with us by what He’s already done, or it’s up to us to do more to impress Him. Are you doing enough in trusting Him with you, or is there more you must do to be sure?
Was what Jesus did on the cross enough? Or must we keep adding to it to make God happy?
If it’s the second, we just have to keep grinding it out, figuring out how many right things we must accumulate and how few wrong things we can get away with. Either we obey Him to make Him pleased with us, or we obey Him because we’re convinced He is already pleased with us.
Hebrews 11:6 says that what He has done is enough, period. So any effort to please Him through our own good works is wasted effort.
He’s pleased. Period. Or rather, exclamation point!
