The 150th Anniversary International PIKE Convention was held from July 25 to July 28 in Richmond, VA. More than 1,200 Pikes from chapters nationwide were in attendance for the salient event. President Marc Otero (’17), as well as sophomores Hugh Mallen (’18) and James Lynn (’18), made the trip to Richmond to represent Northwestern’s Gamma Rho Chapter and House Corporation President, Paul Huettner ('09), represented the Alumni Association.
The International Awards were handed out during the final dinner, complemented with a light show for dramatic effect. Gamma Rho won the Raymond L. Orians Excellence Award, one of the most prestigious awards given out at the convention, which is bestowed upon the top 20% most competitive and successful PIKE chapters across the country.
“The awards ceremony was truly a sight to see. It was great to see all the chapters that worked so hard throughout the year be rewarded for their efforts,” Mallen said. “The best part was winning the [Raymond L. Orians Excellence Award] and being recognized in front of all our fellow PIKES from around the world. That was definitely a proud moment.”
The convention consisted of various lectures, with topics ranging from leadership to recruiting techniques. As another part of the convention, all PIKES in attendance traveled to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville to visit the PIKE Alpha Chapter and 47 West Range, the room in which PIKE was founded in 1868. They toured the campus and saw historic landmarks relevant to the history of PIKE.

Rob Cecil Gives Back to His Community
|
| | Rob Cecil ('18) during Welcome Week |
|
Rob Cecil ('18) returned to his hometown of Tampa Bay, FL after his first year at Northwestern determined to make a change in his community. He spent his summer volunteering as a driver and meal deliverer for Meals on Wheels of Tampa Bay. Over the span of 30 weekdays, he delivered over 300 meals to elderly and disabled people in his community. Using his own car and paying out of pocket for gas, Cecil drove around Tampa Bay delivering anywhere from 5-14 meals every day. The amount of meals he delivered depended on how far he had to drive to reach those in need. A typical route could take over two hours to complete, but Cecil found the experience to be well worth the time and money.
“The whole experience is super rewarding,” Cecil said. “Everyone I deliver to is extremely kind and grateful. Almost all [the meal recipients] have a hard time getting around. Talking to them for a little while and asking how they’re doing goes a long way because you’re the only person they see all day in some cases.”
Cecil enjoyed volunteering for the program so much that he plans on continuing his work for Meals on Wheels of Tampa Bay whenever he has an opportunity to return home. | | | |

Gamma Rho Scholarship Endowment Continues to Grow
The Gamma Rho Endowment Fund which is used for student scholarship and expenses for Pike University is now in its second year. The fund is managed by a highly qualified team at the PIKE Foundation. The fund, which exclusively benefits Gamma Rho, is comprised of two accounts, the PIKE University Fund which has a balance of $100,000 and the John Jones Memorial Fund which has a balance of $38,000. The PIKE U fund is used to offset the expenses of sending Gamma Rho undergraduates to three unique PIKE U events each year including the summer conference. Fees for registration, travel, lodging, and meals can exceed $10,000 annually for the chapter. The Alumni Association has set out with a goal to achieve a balance of $250k in the PIKE U fund in order to fully cover these costs as the annual dividend is typically 4%.
