Founders’ Day at Old Grounds Social Brings Actives & Alumni Together
On Friday, April 27, Gamma Rho celebrated the 150th anniversary of PIKE’s founding by hosting an event with Northwestern PIKE alumni at Old Grounds Social in Lincoln Park.
The event, organized by Miles Rice (’17) and Alumni Association President, Jacob Kerr ('14), was a hit for both actives and alumni alike. Over 30 alumni were in attendance and the active brothers spent their time meeting them and learning about the history of the Gamma Rho Chapter. Old Grounds Social provided pizza, salad, and various hors d'oeuvres for everyone in attendance. The alumni turnout was impressive, but not unexpected. Active members of Gamma Rho spent the weeks leading up to the event communicating with alumni over the phone and sending out invites. New members of Gamma Rho helped contact alumni too, hoping to start forming a strong relationship with the alumni that will last throughout their four years at Northwestern.
“The event ran as smoothly as it possibly could have,” Rice said. “There’s a mutual respect between us actives and the alumni that came before us, and you could feel that PIKE connection in all of our interactions with them.”
Thank you to all the alumni and active brothers that attended the event. We are planning a more formal dinner/dancing Founders Day for 2019. Save the dates will be going out over the summer.
PIKE Volunteers at Feed My Starving Children
|
| |
Last quarter, members of Gamma Rho traveled to the Feed My Starving Children headquarters in Schaumburg to help send food to less fortunate people around the world. The Community Service Chair at the time, John Repetti (’17), organized the event and recruited over 15 brothers to attend.
The participating brothers spent their time at Feed My Starving Children packaging different types of food to send to families in countries such as Haiti. The food assortment consisted of rice, lentils, protein mix, and different types of spices—food that could be shipped overseas easily but that could also be crucial to survival for less fortunate families.
“We had a lot of guys come, and everyone was eager to help,” said Jason Weber (’17), one of the brothers in attendance. “The different tables were competing to package the most boxes. We all were working hard.”
The new Community Service Chair, Albert Shepherd (’18), already has plans to do another community service outing at Feed My Starving Children this quarter.
International Work Day - May 20
|
| |
International Work Day is an event hosted by PIKE chapters nationwide. The day was established in 1997 as an initiative to improve PIKE houses around the country giving brothers an opportunity to bond with each other through labor. Our Gamma Rho Chapter will be participating in International Work Day this year by improving the landscaping around the house. Flowers will be planted in the front yard, and planter boxes will be constructed to put potted plants by the front door. The International Work Day activities will take place from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Sunday, May 20.
This year, the active members of Gamma Rho are asking for the alumni to join them in improving the house on International Work Day. You can RSVP using this link. Other logistical information about the event is included in the link.

Gamma Rho Scholarship Endowment Continues to Grow
The Gamma Rho Endowment Fund which is used for student scholarship and expenses for Pike University is now in its second year. The fund is managed by a highly qualified team at the PIKE Foundation. The fund, which exclusively benefits Gamma Rho, is comprised of two accounts, the PIKE University Fund which has a balance of $100,000 and the John Jones Memorial Fund which has a balance of $38,000. The PIKE U fund is used to offset the expenses of sending Gamma Rho undergraduates to three unique PIKE U events each year including the summer conference. Fees for registration, travel, lodging, and meals can exceed $10,000 annually for the chapter. The Alumni Association has set out with a goal to achieve a balance of $250k in the PIKE U fund in order to fully cover these costs as the annual dividend is typically 4%.
