Chapter Puts Emphasis on Philanthropy, Raises $1,300
This quarter, Gamma Rho introduced two new philanthropy events, September Splash and Project Scare!
For September Splash the Chapter rented out the SPAC pool and hosted an inner tube water polo tournament. Teams of five entered at $50 a team with 100% of the benefits going toward the American Red Cross to support the victims of Hurricane Irma. September Splash was the smaller event of the two and successfully raised $500. The Chapter is aiming to boost the event’s popularity in the coming years.
The following month, PIKE collaborated with Alpha Phi to host Project Scare. During Halloween brothers and the women of Alpha Phi designed and decorated the PIKE house, transforming it into a haunted house. The event involved giving members of the NU community tours for $5 a person. Over 40 members of the Chapter had a blast dressing up in Halloween costumes and scaring students who came to the event. This event raised $800 and the proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society.

Gamma Rho Sets Record Tops All PIKE Chapters in Recruitment |
| |
Gamma Rho, led by Recruitment Chair Matthew Kienzle ('15), broke not only Gamma Rho recruitment records, but also earned the Chapter the coveted top spot for recruitment for the entire Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity. As previously reported last spring, 34 new members accepted their bid and initiated into the Fraternity. Not only is the 100% retention rate a rarity for Pi Kappa Alpha's 220+ chapters, it is also the case for Northwestern's IFC chapters. The summer issue of the Shield and Diamond (link) highlighted this accomplishment, including the graphic seen above. Congrats to Matt, his recruitment team, and the entire Chapter for their hard work!! They are looking to beat this high bar in January when recruitment for this school year begins. | | | | | Gamma Rho Alumni from L to R: Scott Anderson ‘69, Tom Guilfoyle ‘70, Dan Baker ‘70, Bill Levin ‘70, Bob Schooler ‘70, and Scott Weiss ‘72 |

The Chapter welcomed back nearly 20 Gamma Rho alumni who visited Northwestern's campus over the Veterans' Day weekend. The group coordinated with both the Chapter, Alumni Association, and Northwestern Alumni Department organizing a campus tour, PIKE House tour, dinner at Prairie Moon, PIKE tailgate, and the NU v. Purdue football game. The alumni had a great time touring the new PIKE House and spending time with the young alumni at the tailgate where we celebrated multiple veterans who were part of the alumni reunion.
The alumni presented the Chapter with a gift - the 1970 Chapter Composite. They recounted the story of the composite which, after the Chapter was disbanded, was passed from one brother pictured in the composite to another from time to time. Each caretaker would sign his name on the back along with the time period which he possessed the composite with the intention of the final living brother in possession of it bound to return it to the Gamma Rho PIKE House before he, too, entered Chapter Eternal. The composite has traveled from Gainesville, FL, to Raleigh, NC, to Austin, TX, to Danville, KY. Various alumni have "guarded" the composite until earlier this month when all decided that the reunion was the appropriate time to return the composite to its rightful, permanent place in the PIKE House.

Gamma Rho Scholarship Endowment Continues to Grow
The Gamma Rho Endowment Fund which is used for student scholarship and expenses for Pike University is now in its second year. The fund is managed by a highly qualified team at the PIKE Foundation. The fund, which exclusively benefits Gamma Rho, is comprised of two accounts, the PIKE University Fund which has a balance of $100,000 and the John Jones Memorial Fund which has a balance of $38,000. The PIKE U fund is used to offset the expenses of sending Gamma Rho undergraduates to three unique PIKE U events each year including the summer conference. Fees for registration, travel, lodging, and meals can exceed $10,000 annually for the chapter. The Alumni Association has set out with a goal to achieve a balance of $250k in the PIKE U fund in order to fully cover these costs as the annual dividend is typically 4%.
