May, 2019

As we approach Unit 60 graduation later today a summary of the past semester is in order. It has been a solid ten weeks of training, deployments and miscellaneous activities. In fact, at times the ride has been pretty wild!

The week of May 12th-18th was one of our busiest in recent history regarding deployments. During this stretch…
  • Aquatics deployed to Pearland, Texas to help with the rebuilding of homes as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
  • Our Tech Rescue unit deployed to Rockport, Texas to assist with the rebuilding of homes as well.
  • The Mobile Response Team (MRT) was invited to join Samaritan’s Purse on an Alaskan project from May 12-26. They were tasked with building volunteer quarters as well as other rebuild work in both Dillingham and Ruby. This truly was a special opportunity to serve and we counted it a privilege as an organization to be selected to assist in this capacity. Continue to pray for the citizens of Alaska and for the gospel to go forth. Several men on our team mentioned the “darkness” felt in some communities and the need for reaching out to these people.
  • Our Campus Support Team (CST) and Flight traveled to Skiatook, OK to assist with property maintenance work.
At the same time all of the above was taking place, Longview, Texas was hit hard with straight line winds that caused considerable harm in the form of downed trees and structural damage to homes. Three different teams were deployed there over the course of four days to perform sawyer work and clean up duties. With all of our battalion units deployed it was a unique opportunity to employ Basic Training Unit 61 for assistance. A team from Basic was also tasked to perform a weapons search in the Tyler area that same day. These kinds of weeks are logistical challenges but we are grateful to God for providing the work and personnel needed to answer every call.
Basic Training: Unit 61 finished with 32 men advancing in yet another powerful advancement ceremony. Special thanks to our cadre and staff for a job well done. We are projecting lower than normal numbers for returning to ERT so please be in prayer that God would move in the hearts of men to continue the course here at ALERT.

Graduation: This afternoon we will graduate 29 men – most who will be going home after completing their graduation requirements. Our prayer is that they would take the truths learned here and implement them in their homes, churches and communities. There is a resonating theme this week regarding the importance of maintaining good works and ministering to the needy. May this be the case not only in their lives, but ours as well.

Future Training: If you are considering attending either EMT, Aquatics, Leadership & Communications or being a part of the Mobile Response Team this summer, please notify us immediately. If you are seriously considering attending our fall Fire Academy, please let us know that as well.

As a footnote, a number of opportunities now exist for you to become involved in volunteering for disaster relief through outside organizations. With our men on furlough it is even more important that our reserves rise to the occasion and offer their availability to help the unfortunate. Opportunities exist in the Detroit area, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ohio and possibly Kansas. Ottawa, Canada has also had flooding and may need assistance. If you’re looking for direction you might want to start with Samaritan’s Purse although there are probably a number of umbrella agencies you could work under as well.

May God bless you this summer and as always keep in touch with us and how we can be praying for you.

In Him,

Colonel Behr
