We often think that curation is something that helps us collect stuff, but, once you start doing it, you realize how much the essential skill that develops over time is the ability to filter, excluding.

“Collecting is additive, but interesting to note, curation is subtractive - what you leave out is almost more important than what you include. The best way to reflect on collections and curation is described by Frank Chimero in his post on how to put things in order about a multitude of things.

He regards the collection as a vessel full of scattered pearls and the curation as a necklace made of pearls. Collecting is like a bowl full of scattered pearls. The pearls, taken one by one, could be of great value, but become almost useless if randomly thrown into the container. Curation is what happens when some of these pearls are selected and strung into a beautiful necklace. Pearls now have a purpose ... "
