🔘 TV lies

Words from a film from 45 years ago (1976). Relevant then as now.

“1) Television is a goddamn amusement park!
It is a circus, a carnival, a set of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, lion tamers, jugglers, hippies, and footballers. TV is in the business of killing boredom. So if you want the truth go to the gurus! Go to God! Go to yourself! Because that is the only place where you can find some form of truth. But my friend, rest assured that we (the TV folks) will never get any truth.

2) We will tell you whatever you want to hear. We enjoy telling lies.
We will tell you that Kojak always finds out about the killer and that nobody ever gets cancer in Archie Bunker's house. And despite the amount of mess in which the hero of the moment got involved, don't worry, take a look at your watch and be sure that before the end of the episode he will surely get out of it. We on TV tell you any shit you want to hear. We specialize in illusions, my friend!

3) Nothing you see is true!
But you, the people, sit there day after day, night after night, of all ages, races and religions.

4) We are everything you know.
You, the spectators, are beginning to believe in the illusions we create here. You are beginning to think that TV is reality and that your lives are not real! You do whatever the TV tells you, you dress like they dress on TV, you eat what you see on TV, you raise your kids by showing them TV, you even hope that one day they can become TV stars. Think the same way TV thinks.

5) This is madness, you are maniacs!
In the name of God, wake up: you people are a real thing, We are the illusion!

6) Turn off the television!
Turn off your televisions now. Now! Turn them off and leave them off. Turn them off now in the middle of this sentence that I am telling you now. Turn them off! "

The damage we inflict on ourselves watching TV is probably incalculable.

This damage is deep and triple.

1. We are deeply misinformed.

2. We are completely distracted by the real stories that we will have to pay attention to instead.

3. We throw away an untold amount of time and energy that we could use to inform ourselves and to create the world we want to live in.
