Looting and Climate Change Threats to Mongolian Archaeology and Cultural Heritage |

Both looting and shifting climate norms have a long history in Mongolia, as in many regions of the world. However, there is increasing evidence that both are impacting Mongolian archaeological sites and cultural heritage at unprecedented levels. Neither looting nor climate change are simple issues with easy solutions or goals that are applicable in every case. This presentation will discuss what the impacts of climate change and looting are on the archaeology of Mongolia today, as well as steps being taken to protect Mongolia’s priceless cultural heritage from these threats.

| About the speaker: Dr. Julia Clark |
|
She is the Cultural Heritage Coordinator for the American Center for Mongolian studies, the founder of NOMAD Science, an Associate Director for Bioregions International and an adjunct lecturer at Flinders University. Dr. Clark is an anthropological archaeologist has been conducting research in Mongolia since 2007. She has just completed an Endeavor Fellowship in Australia aimed at improving Mongolian-Australian-US archaeological ties.

The American Center for Mongolian Studies (ACMS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting scholarship in Mongolian Studies. The ACMS Speaker Series are organized in partnership with the U.S. Embassy and the Natsagdorj Library and provides an important platform for researchers engaged in Mongolia to share their experiences and findings with the public. The event promotes information exchange on a variety of subjects related to Mongolia and is free and open to the public.
