| Dear friends of Wilbur:
Anxiety and depression are two of the most common, and most debilitating, psychological conditions.
Anxiety is a feeling, often with an epicenter in the stomach and chest, which radiates with a buzz through the body, causing a feeling and thought, that something bad is about to happen. Anxiety ranges from mild to moderate to severe. Anxiety can be a major obstacle to normal daily functioning.
Depression is a feeling, throughout the entire system of grim darkness, often accompanied by a sensation of heavy weightfulness and severe fatigue. Depression can cause the person to literally see dark clouds on a sunny day. Depression can cause world famous author, William Styron, to stay under the covers in a hotel bed, while floors below they are preparing to award him the Legion of Honor. For his story, see “Darkness Visible” by William Styron.
The most immediate, effective, cost-efficient treatment for anxiety is abdominal breathing. Master abdominal breathing, and you will conquer anxiety.
It is relatively easy for a person experiencing even severe anxiety, to learn and practice abdominal breathing. Practice can take place alone, or in the presence of others, anywhere.
The most immediate, effective, cost efficient, treatment for depression, is exercise.
It is somewhat difficult for a person experiencing depression to learn and practice exercise, as depression saps the energy required for exercise. Very often it takes a friend, or a hired coach, to help a depressed person begin an exercise routine.
The legal physical medical treatment for anxiety is one of many medicines (downers) which "calm or quiet' the system, by taking it "down".
Some of the illegal treatments for anxiety are heroin, opioids, morphine. While initially delightful, in the mid and long term these drugs are, with noteworthy exceptions, a psycho-physical social disaster.
The legal physical medical treatments for depression are medicines which rouse or energize the system (uppers). Zoloft, Prozac, Luvox and the SSRI family. These medicines help a small percentage of the population and fail with the rest, often doing damage.
The illegal physical treatments for depression are cocaine and methamphetamine. Both feel great at first and very soon fail, often doing damage to health, family, and/or business.
Alcohol, a central nervous system depressant, is used for both anxiety and depression. In the short term, in small amounts, alcohol can be effective for both conditions. In the mid and longer term alcohol is toxic and fails miserably as medicine.

| | Lithium is a mood stabilizer which has been used effectively with both anxiety and depression. It is often prescribed for bipolar disorder. The water at Wilbur Hot Springs contains Lithium and has been referred to as Lithium Water. |

A plethora of recent research indicates that immersion in nature heals
anxiety and depression. Wilbur is prescription grade nature, RxN.
After
practicing psychotherapy for 50 years, I strongly favor abdominal
breathing, exercise, and immersion in Wilbur's waters and a peaceful
environment, for anxiety and depression.
Say hello next time you are at Wilbur. We're the tall couple with laughing eyes and smiling hearts.
Wishing you excellent health,
Richard and Jolee, Caretakers, Wilbur Hot Springs 1972-present

| | | Please join us in wishing Nellie Ramirez a wonderful retirement, after 20 years with Wilbur!
Nellie worked at the Colusa laundromat for 20 years, where she met Ezzie, a previous Wilbur general manager. Ezzie was so impressed with her work ethic that she hired her to be head of housekeeping.
When asked what she attributed her good health to? She replied, staying active all her life, working, and being outdoors, which she enjoyed here at Wilbur. She used to go dancing every weekend when she was younger; doing Cumbia, Salsa and Ranchera.
Nellie said it was easy to spend 20 years at Wilbur because she loves the people so much. Everyone has been so great to her.
In her well- deserved retirement, she plans to watch a lot of TV! She is excited to take the first month to go visit her daughter and son who live in southern California.
Nellie has 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and she will continue to reside in Colusa.
Warm Wilbur wishes Nellie. We will miss you! Jerry and Brennan Newberry WHS General Managers |
