Legends of America Newsletter - Spooktacular Edition
"For over all there hung a cloud of fear, a sense of mystery the spirit daunted, and said as plain as a whisper in the ear, “The place is haunted.” — Thomas Hood

Lately, the only thing that goes bump in the night around here is me banging my knee on the way to the bathroom.  But I still get the heeby jeebies once in awhile, especially in the wee hours around 4am.

There's a chill in the air as Autumn battles Winter for dominance over dark. I do my usual routine..groggily slip on my jacket, pick up the laptop, stumble into the kitchen and pull the flashlight from the drawer. I hear the distinct pitter patter of paws as Kaydee and Riley dog join me at the back door, anxiously awaiting it's grand opening to the outside world. I have to slap the flashlight in my hand to get it to come on (not sure why I just don't get another flashlight), and we all venture out for our several yard journey down to the cabin office by the creek that leads into the lake.

My senses are heightened even without my first cup of java, as the leaves and acorns from the oak trees crinkle and crunch under my feet. It's a moonless night, my eyes are still adjusting to the ever-blackness, as I slap the flashlight again to get it to come back on. The dogs move ahead of me as if clearing a path when they suddenly stop... ears up, eyes toward the creek on the other side of our destination.  I pause and whisper "What is it?"... That's when I hear the commotion in the leaves on the other side of the cabin.  Is it another dog?  A deer?  Could be a possum, we have several around here. I've even seen the occasional red fox, and at one point our neighbors had chickens that would "free range" on my cabin porch.
My heart beating fast, awake more than I should be, I come to the only possible conclusion... it's the creek monster. I dash for the cabin's front porch in my race for who will get there first...me, or the dreaded noise from the other side. My furry protectors, sensing my excitement, immediately go into action with ferocious snarls and barks (as ferocious as little dogs can be), which scares me even more because now I KNOW there's something down there. The flashlight goes out again as I reach the porch in time to face plant into the garden orb spider web, begin flailing in full panic trying to get the sticky thread off my face and out my hair, knowing that at any moment the spider is going to crawl down my forehead as the creek monster comes around the corner. I reach for the door knob, yank it open and stumble inside, slamming it behind me...dogs be damned, they can take care of themselves.

Flipping on the porchlight, expecting to view the carnage of my protectors attacking the creature built up in my mind, I find both Riley and Kaydee Dog in full run, howling barks, teeth ready to battle...chasing a squirrel up a tree.

And so begins another day at Fort Alexander on the Lake of the Ozarks.

Happy Halloween! Kathy and I hope you enjoy this special "Spooktacular" edition of our newsletter.

What's New on LOA

Not all new editions are "ghostly", but Kathy did add up a few that will give you the creeps.

Winchester Mystery House - From our 2009 visit to California, the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose was the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, who, to ward off spirits, hired laborers to work 24/7 for 38 years to constantly renovate the mansion in an effort to ward off spirits.

H. H. Holmes and the Murder Castle of Chicago - Known by the name of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes or more commonly, H. H. Holmes, he was a prolific serial killer who operated in the late 19th century.
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic AsylumThe Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia opened its doors to patients in 1864. Today the building is said to be extremely haunted.

Alfred G. Packer - Colorado Cannibal - Prospector and guide in the Rocky Mountains during the 1870s, Alfred Packer confessed to cannibalism during the winter of 1874.

Author Submission (not creepy, but good reading nonetheless)
The Journal of Sedona Schnebly(by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger) Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly followed her husband west when their small Missouri town condemned his Presbyterian religion. Arriving in Arizona Territory in 1901, they planted orchards and hosted early tourists in what is now named Sedona.
Did You Know?

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays still celebrated. This seemingly bizarre tradition originated hundreds of years ago with the Celtic people of pre-medieval Europe.

Ghost Stories from the Old West

We've collected quite a few spooky tales over the years.  From "Black Jack Ketchum Lives On!"  to "Tom Cypher's Phantom Engine"... it's time to pull up the blanket and snuggle in while you adjust your iPad for these Ghost Stories from the Old West.
Ghosts of Alcatraz Island
Another from our 2009 journey to California - With its centuries old history from ancient Native Americans, to Fort Alcatraz, to a Military Barracks, and most often known service as one of the toughest federal penitentiaries in the Nation, it is no wonder that this place is said to be one of the most haunted in the nation.

Often described as a portal to another dimension, Alcatraz is filled with the energy of those who came to the “Rock” and seemingly never left.
