Design Innovation for Middle Housing:

Single Stair Sessions

The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) is excited to be hosting a virtual micro-conference in collaboration with LGA Architectural Partners. The "Single Stair Sessions" will offer a series of discussions on housing innovation and alternative solutions to improve the feasibility of multiplexes and small apartment buildings.

These sessions will bring together leading architects, engineers, academics, and building code experts to explore how alternative building code compliance can benefit ‘missing middle’ building designs to expand housing options in urban areas.

Don't miss this chance to explore smart solutions for Canada’s housing challenges! Learn more about each session and register below.

This knowledge mobilization event is supported by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Housing Supply Challenge – Round 4: Building for the Future, which supports innovative solutions that remove barriers to increasing housing supply in Canada.

Day 1 - The 3 Ps: Pilot Projects and Prototypes

March 18, 12:00-1:30pm ET

Recent zoning reforms across Canada have created new opportunities for ‘missing middle’ housing, yet prescriptive building codes often hinder the feasibility of small-scale housing. Join us as architects present innovative single egress stair (SES) designs for multiplexes and small apartment buildings. Each presenter will highlight their pilot project, sharing insights on opportunities and challenges in implementing alternative solutions for middle housing.

This session will conclude with a brief Q&A, providing an opportunity for further discussion.

Featured speakers:

Janna Levitt, Kevin Martin, and Conrad Speckert,

LGA Architectural Partners (Toronto, ON)

Inge Roecker, AIR Studio (Vancouver, BC)

Matt Bolen, mcCallumSather (Hamilton, ON)

Uros Novakovic, Office Ou (Toronto, ON)

Day 2 - The 2 Ss: Safety and Sustainability

March 19, 12:00-1:30pm ET

Prescriptive building codes require two means of egress for multi-unit buildings over two storeys, however other jurisdictions demonstrate that medium-density housing can be safely constructed with a single stair. This session will explore the technical safety and sustainability considerations of SES building design, featuring insights from fire engineers and building code experts from Sweden, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

This session will conclude with a brief Q&A, providing an opportunity for further discussion.

Featured speakers:

Axel Mossberg, Bengt Dahlgren Brand & Risk (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Ian Mulder, City of Edmonton (Edmonton, AB)

Karl Wallasch, Trigon Fire Safety (London, UK)

Mike Mariano, Schemata Workshop (Seattle, USA)

Morgan Tritthart, GHL Consultants Ltd (Vancouver, BC)

Ryan Bruer, Ha/f Climate Design (Toronto, ON)

Day 3 - CityTalk | Live

Addressing Canada's Housing Supply: Can Regulations Drive Housing Innovation?

March 20, 12:00-1:00pm ET

Housing design is defined by zoning bylaws and building codes, often seen as rigid constraints. With Canada facing a massive housing shortage, innovation is more crucial than ever.

Can regulations spark, rather than stifle, innovation in middle housing?

Join us to explore how regulatory frameworks impact housing supply. This discussion will highlight how industry leaders are challenging, adapting, and influencing policies to unlock more 'missing middle' housing solutions.

Featured speakers:

Alkarim Devani, mddl (Calgary, AB)

Blair Scorgie, Scorgie Planning (Toronto, ON)

Carolyn Whitzman, School of Cities, University of Toronto (Toronto, ON)

Dan Winer, Small Housing BC (Vancouver, BC)

Janna Levitt, LGA Architectural Partners (Toronto, ON)
