Making the Case for the Middle: The Potential of Middle Housing Production in Alberta
Across Canada, provinces are racing to address housing needs—and Alberta is no exception.
To meet rising demands and a lack of affordability, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has identified a need for Alberta to build 20,000 additional units above current projections by 2030.
Middle housing stands out as a key opportunity. In response, CUI and mddl have released Making the Case for the Middle, a new report highlighting the potential of middle housing to help address Alberta's housing needs.
Middle housing includes a range of housing types, including duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, courtyard apartments, and live/work housing types. But shifting to middle housing isn’t just about numbers; it calls for an adaptation of our municipal processes—and a cultural shift to embrace new kinds of communities.
