Subject: Our Promise Renewed

   THE BUSINESS of GOVERNANCE

   Newsletter No 89 |May 2024

Hello Friend,

How are things going with you? We remain aware of the challenging times and so we continue to develop policies and projects that will alleviate our people's suffering in the short, medium, and long term.

This year marks 25 years of continuous democracy in Nigeria. The ups and downs we have faced as a nation remind us how fragile democracy is and how important it is that we guard it. The book I am reading at the moment alludes to this fact. I hope you will find time to join me in reading How Democracies Die - What History Reveals About Our Future by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. Although the writers are focused on American democracy, there are lessons for Nigeria in this book, which I will share in the coming weeks.

As the introductory part of the book shows, economic upheavals often lead to people making bad political decisions. This is why we, the political leaders, must always think about bringing economic prosperity to our people.

This remains our focus here in Oyo State. In fact, in the next two weeks, one of the actions we took to bring development to our people in the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso Zones will be highlighted as we commission the 76.67 km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Road.

Oyo State Signing of Gas Agreement with Shell Energy

The construction of this road, where none hitherto existed, is a testament to our conviction that where roads go, development follows. I remember having a conversation with Chief Adepoju Olusola, Chairman of Oyo Sugarcane Processors Ltd. He pointed out what a boost this project would be to his business as they can easily bring their raw materials from Ogbomoso to Iseyin via this new route.

This project will indeed play a key role in the industrialisation of Oyo State. As I have said on previous occasions, our plan is to ensure that development does not begin and end in the State capital, Ibadan, alone but spreads to all zones.

These road constructions are attracting further investments to the State, as attested to by the CEO of Milkin Barn Agriserve Ltd, Mr Tony Jibunoh. He made the decision to invest in and remain in Oyo State after turning down the same offer two years earlier because we completed the 65 km Moniya-Ijaiye-Iseyin Road, which links to the 34.85km Iseyin-Oyo Road, where the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub is hosted.

Government cannot employ everyone, but we can make it possible for the private sector to succeed so that they can provide direct employment for our people.

As we mark five years in office on May 29, 2024, we restate our promise to the good people of Oyo State that we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that we move our people to more economic prosperity through the provision of the infrastructure required to create an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive.

Talk to you again soon.
