   THE BUSINESS of GOVERNANCE

   Newsletter No 99 | October 2024

Hello Friend,

How is your day going?

We are firmly in the last quarter of the year 2024, and as I noted in my last email, it’s best to start early to ensure we make the most of the time left in the year 2024 to achieve our goals. For me, I will be reviewing our promises made for Years 1 and 2 in the Roadmap to Sustainable Development 2023- 2027 to see what we must complete in the next seven months.

October is also the anniversary of our nationhood, and I used the opportunity to deliver a message to the good people of Oyo State. If you missed the broadcast, you'll be able to catch up here.

As you know, we are always on an investment drive, looking for opportunities to support and encourage more businesses to come to Oyo State. A few days ago, I was at the commissioning of a private sector investment in the tourism sector. Let me use this opportunity to invite more investors to our State. We will do our best to support you and create a conducive environment for you to thrive.

Yesterday, we also commissioned the first modern building designed with productivity in mind in the secretariat and handed it over to the Local Government Service Commission and Local Government Staff Pension Board, who had been tenants in the Water Corporation building for years. The two-storey office complex has twenty-seven rooms on each floor, with conference rooms and a cafeteria. It also has a three-hundred-person capacity auditorium and a fully furnished Computer Training School. So, aside from being an office complex, it is designed to generate revenue.

Earlier today, we received a document that I would describe as a landmark in the quest to build strong institutions at Oyo State. This is a review of the rules to bring about standard practices that will guide our civil and public service. The report, tagged Review/Update of Public Service Rules and Other Regulations in the State Civil/Public Service, was presented by the Chairperson and a former Secretary to the State Government/Head of Service, Chief Adebisi Adesola.

The next step is to adopt and implement the presentation. I can assure the good people of Oyo State that this will be done as soon as possible.

I am hoping that years from now, when I am no longer in office in Oyo State, posterity will look back at this moment and pinpoint the fact that the institutions that we are building in Oyo State are what helped to leave a lasting legacy for our dear State.

I know for a fact that building institutions is not an easy task and there are several competing interests, which can even distract us from focusing on the important things. This is why I urge you to always say this prayer for us: that we identify who our real enemies are so we do not turn against our friends.

Talk to you again soon.
