| | Day 4: Think Smaller!
"How we spend our days is how we spend our life.” Annie Dillard
We transform our lives in consistent little steps — not radical overnight overhauls. Expecting ourselves to make massive, instant changes is a surefire short circuit to overwhelm.
When you’re creating action steps to reach your goal, think smaller. Consider these examples:
- Nutritionists have estimated that reducing your food intake by 250 calories a day (about 2/3rd of a choc-chip cookie) can shed up to 11kg in a year.
- Put a bottle of water on your desk.
- Skip a $5 coffee per day and you’ll save almost $2,000 per year.
- To write a 55,000-word book in a year, technically you need only write one paragraph (150 words) a day.
- Get up 30 minutes earlier and you’ll find an extra 3.5 hours a week!
Small actions are instantly gratifying and that’s motivating. The women participating in our Reinvention Project have found that staying accountable for simple things like drinking more water and less caffeine, or going to bed 30 minutes earlier, has led to a major shift in energy, which feeds directly into other sectors of life. Similarly, our 90-day, 15-minutes-a-day program has led to extraordinary changes in people’s lives (and has in fact saved people’s lives in some cases). |
| | Time for action! Today, we want you to come up with the Action Steps required to reach your goal. We’d like you to break this down into the smallest possible steps — something that may only take a few minutes, and barely any effort. Then do it. Just that first, little step.
For example, your goal might be to go from ‘couch’ to ‘marathon’. That’s likely to seem overwhelming at face value. What if the first step was to phone and book a checkup with your GP? And what if that’s all you did towards it today — just to make the appointment? You’re still one step closer to getting there.
Each step taken towards a goal counts. Celebrate the quick, minor wins, and celebrate them often enough and you’ll astonish yourself about what’s possible over the medium and long terms.
Over to you: Create your list of actions, and do the first one. We’d love to hear about this in the Facebook group.
Remember - our challenge ends tomorrow with a 1-hour epic masterclass on Facebook live at 1pm AEST! We’ll be wrapping up the big picture and providing some options for some ongoing ways to stay focused. See you there!
