What are the obstacles that may prevent you from reaching your goal? Visualise each of these in your mind and write each down, followed by a plan to overcome them. Your plan may include more than one solution. Here’s an example:
Obstacle:
“I won’t feel motivated to get up and exercise when the alarm goes off in the morning.” Plan:
Express this in terms of: “If / when [obstacle] then I will [action to overcome obstacle]” "If I’m not motivated to get up and exercise in the morning, then I’ll commit to doing this for just three days at first and see if it makes a difference to how I feel during the day.”
“If I’m still struggling, I will…” - lay out my exercise gear beside the bed the night before (or even wear it to bed!)
- take a half hour walk at lunch time instead, and experiment with exercising at different times of the day
- download podcasts or audio books to listen to while walking
- invite a friend to walk with me and have coffee together afterwards
