Orcas, Humpbacks, Gray Whales, & Minkes are Here!

In recent days we have been seeing all four species of whales that spend time in the Salish Sea. Minke whales and humpback whales are starting to arrive from their migrations, a group of our "Sounder" gray whales are still here feeding before continuing their migration northward, and Bigg's orcas have been roaming throughout the region! Port Angeles Tours Are Underway

We are excited to announce that our 2024 season in Port Angeles is now underway. If you are visiting Olympic National Park, our daily half-day tours are the perfect way to see whales AND the natural beauty of the Olympics in one trip. Being located farther west in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, PA sees humpback whales in greater numbers (in addition to orcas, of course). We're just a couple of trips in but we've already seen humpbacks "Split Fin" and "Smiley," as well as the T46B family of Bigg's orcas. (photo by Rachel Rodell)

What Have We Been Seeing?

Photo of T65A3 and T65A5 orcas (photo by PSE Naturalist Bart Rulon)

Two brothers from the T65A family - "Indy" T65A5 and "Amir" T65A3 - have been traveling separately from the rest of their family and have been cruising Puget Sound together for the last couple of weeks. It's been fun to see these brothers in action. On Mother's Day they pursued 2 of the gray whales (2557 and 2259) that are in the area feeding. The gray whales fended them off, but it was an exciting moment for sure. (photo by Bart Rulon)

Other whales we’ve seen lately include the T124A pod, T49A pod, T19 and T19B, T125A and T128.

Puffin Tours Begin June 1

For 2024 we're expanding our popular Puffin Tours! Just north of Port Townsend lie two wildlife refuges that are home to the only nesting colonies of tufted puffins in the Puget Sound area. These are gorgeous birds and a treat to see. Tours depart out of Port Townsend June through September, and new this year - Edmonds in July and August. (photo by Bart Rulon)

Whether you are a “lister” or an explorer, the marine environment offers tremendous bird watching opportunities. Puget Sound Express offers the Pacific Northwest’s only bird watching tours dedicated to getting you out to see marine birds.
