We're thrilled to let you know that there appear to be at least 6 gray whales in the Salish Sea right now. The annual gray whale migration from the Baja Peninsula to the Bering Sea is a challenging, 10,000 mile journey for these great creatures. We’re fortunate that a group of these whales known as "Sounders" makes a detour from their off-shore journey to join us in the early spring to feed on the ghost shrimp, building-up their fat stores for the remainder of their journey to Alaska.
The whales in the area include CRC22 Earhart, CRC53 Little Patch, CRC531 Gretchen, CRC2246 Azulão, & CRC2362 Thidwick. Little Patch has been around for a few months, getting a head start feeding on all of that ghost shrimp. Azulão was an early arrival last year and s/he is on schedule again for 2025. 6 grays is excellent for mid-February and we look forward to seeing more as the days pass. |
