Little actions, big changes: How we're reviving Knysna

Learn about our latest projects.

We tackled a growing issue at Hospital Hill near Oakhill School.

Teaming up with Oakhill’s maintenance crew, we cleared overgrown Aggies & thick bushes, creating a safer route commonly used by community members.

This area had been a hideout for drug users & squatters, posing a safety risk to pedestrians & school kids.

Though we're a small team of just four guys, we couldn't be prouder of the change we've brought to this essential community space.

Plus, we used the cleared Aggies to enhance other local gardens!

🌼 Spring Cleaning Heads-Up!

An influential voice that represents you

Become an active citizen.

In the heart of our unbelievably beautiful town lies an untapped power source: Unity.

Introducing the Greater Knysna Business Chamber (GKBC). They focus on what businesses & people can achieve through strength in numbers & collaboration.

From Sedgefield to Rheenendal, this platform isn't about commerce alone. It's about every voice, every resident, & every idea.

GKBC embraces all, understanding that the essence of a prosperous community is its people.

We have a chamber that actively seeks to:

  • Engage with the local government, ensuring our communal voice isn't just heard but acted upon.

  • Provide platforms for business engagements while holding decision-makers accountable.

  • Bridge connections not just within our town but extend to regional, provincial, & even national territories.

You don't need a storefront or an office to join either.

Every individual, irrespective of their professional background, can join. You're not just a member of a chamber; you're an advocate for change.

We invite you to not just be a spectator but an active player.

Let your thoughts, your ideas, & your passions take flight, supported by the combined strength of the GKBC.

Our town is a mosaic of talents, passions, & visions. Let's harness that diversity & channel it through the GKBC.

â™» Remember your e-waste â™»

Proper recycling of these items help us recover billions of Rands worth of raw materials & precious metals such as gold, palladium, copper, & iron, among others.

Leader of the pack

Meet our local changemakers & join causes that align with you.

KAWS is one of the most recognised & admired welfare organisations in the Knysna area. It has been caring for animals in need for a staggering 52 years & is staffed by 16 compassionate, dedicated individuals – 12 at the Kennels & 4 at the Charity Shop.

Leading the team at the Kennels as Kennel Manager is Belinda Speed, who has dedicated her life to animal welfare.

“No two days are ever the same,” Belinda explained. “And the work can be very challenging, especially when decisions have to be made as to whether an animal can be saved.”

However, her job has many rewards: “The best part is seeing abandoned, frightened, wild or mistreated animals blossom into adoptable domestic pets ready to be placed in new, loving homes.”

There are many more aspects to Belinda’s busy role: overseeing the running of a veterinary clinic for people who can’t afford private vet care, managing the team of inspectors, outreach volunteers, & dog walkers.

“Consistent funding is a real problem. Our charity shop provides around 50% of our income & events like quizzes & golf days help, but it’s never quite enough.”

Belinda believes that the corporate sector can play a significant role.

KAWS’ Club 101 has been launched to encourage businesses to donate R101 every month by debit order.

“R101 is a small amount for businesses. If we could sign up 3,000 of them, it would cover the shortfall.”

This kind of creative thinking, energy & drive makes Belinda special. She doesn’t only help countless animals on a daily basis within limited resources. She enhances the lives of animals & human communities.

Belinda has a simple but powerful philosophy:

“Whenever you can, choose kindness. This applies to every sphere of life - speaking to a cashier, walking down the street, or smiling at a stranger. Saying hello. Saying thank you. Acknowledging the mere existence of another human.

But kindness isn’t just for people. It should be extended to all living things. Don’t step on the ant or squash the flowers growing on the pathway. Kindness can manifest a change in society that is so needed right now.”

Please contact Belinda on 082 767 0847 or visit their website to learn more about the 101 Club or any other aspect of KAWS’ amazing work.
