Subject: The latest from Revive Knysna

Sick & tired of the huge piles of rubbish building up on & around the Noetzie Road, Hlalani resident Themba Mase decided to take matters into his own hands – literally.

Starting with his own street about a month ago & helped by a couple of neighbours, he began cutting grass & collecting garbage. In just one week they’d collected around 700 bagfuls. Then they ran out of bags. A chance meeting with Action Ads owner Julie Gosling led to the involvement of Penny Rice of Keep Knysna Clean (now part of Revive Knysna). Not only did she provide more bags but also rakes & brooms.

It’s difficult to overstate the sheer scale of the Noetzie Road challenge. Apart from the huge potholes, there’s rubbish spilling from the streets & down the banks, plus a constant stream of sewage that runs across the road, down into Hornlee & eventually into the lagoon.

“One of the biggest problems is the amount of litter coming from the spaza shops. Kids play in the sewage streams, go to the shops, buy chips, eat them without washing their hands, then just throw the wrappers away”, Themba explained.

Even when rubbish has been bagged-up, they are often torn open by the dogs & pigs that roam throughout the area. “Getting the bags collected is a real headache”, said Themba. However, the municipality are now collecting the bags on a Sunday.

“The Municipality did provide some wheelie bins a while ago, but the roads are unsuitable for the garbage collection trucks. So people just used the bins to transport the rubbish to the road & tip it there. Some of the shops even pay kids a couple of bucks to dump their rubbish!”

In addition to a regular supply of bags for the clean-up operation,
Temba desperately needs

  • a lockable cage for the bags,

  • volunteers with suitable vehicles to help take the bags
    to the Municipal dump

  • and financial assistance.

â€śI give my helpers what I can but if we had more money we could get a bigger team.”

Themba recently started his own painting & gardening business called Loerie Services but hasn’t yet found work. He is a friendly, dedicated young man on a mission.

Richard to the rescue!

This is how it's done when the good people of Knysna get involved

@1.45pm on Friday 31st, Revive Knysna put out a post requesting help with our 'Welcome to Knysna' sign that had blown off on the N2

@2.20pm Richard of Garden Route Branding Co had responded saying that he could help.

@13.30 on Monday, 3rd Feb the sign had been collected & cleaned, a brand new frame manufactured for the sign and re-erected on site (no charge to Revive Knysna)

Can you believe it ?

Richard van der Westhuizen of Garden Route Branding Co you are another of Knysna's heros.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts

 Main Road magic

Once a month all our Revive Knysna volunteers gather to work on neglected areas in & around town - like this project at 66 Main Road.

Thank you to our Revive Team (especially our new members) & the Keep Knysna Clean team for all their hard work. We must also express sincere gratitude to our community for their generous donation of plants - and to the Knysna Fire Department for watering our beautiful new flowerbed.

We look forward to our next working activity on the
26th March, details to follow on our social media.

Looking good!

Local businesses are catching the refurbishment bug. Here are just a few of the shopfronts around town that have been transformed. Well done to everyone concerned – you’re doing Knysna proud!
