HOW TO GET TO THE AMALFI COAST

Airports: The nearest airport to the Amalfi Coast is in Naples, but you may have landed at Rome Fiumicino Airport if you planned to spend a little time in the Eternal City first. Either way, you’ll need to use one of the travel methods below to get to Amalfi from Rome or Naples.

By train: The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast is to take a train to Naples or Salerno train station and then get on one of the local buses that will take you to the main coastal towns. The only town on the Amalfi Coast that has a train station is Vietri sul Mare, but this is at the eastern-most edge of the Amalfi Coast. You can get direct trains to Vietri sul Mare from Naples and Salerno.

By boat: An Amalfi Coast travel guide wouldn’t be complete without recommending arriving by boat. It’s one of the most scenic (and stress-free) ways to get to the Amalfi Coast. It’s more expensive to book a private boat, but worth it if you can splurge. Otherwise, from Naples’ Beverello port, you can book a ferry with a reputable company like Alilauro. They stop at Sorrento before heading to Positano, Ischia, Amalfi, and a few other towns.

By bus: It’s possible to get from Rome to Amalfi by bus from June through September. A shuttle departs from Rome’s Tiburtina bus stop at the train station and stops at Positano and Praiano before heading back. It takes about 4.5 hours and is an affordable option if you’re traveling to Amalfi on a budget. From both Rome and Naples, a company called Positano Shuttle carries passengers to Positano and Praiano. The bonus is they will drop you directly at your hotel or Airbnb!

By car: Italians will rarely recommend first-time visitors to rent a car due to hills, narrow streets, oblivious tourists, no/expensive parking, and honking horns. We recommend not renting a car on your first trip, but you can definitely hire a driver who knows how to get you safely from your arrival point to your final destination.

Getting around the Amalfi Coast: For less than 100 euros a day, you could hire a private, driver to help you navigate the winding, busy streets of Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi. If you’d rather spend your budget on delicious food or amazing hotels, then opt to use the Sita Sud bus. It’s the local transit system that runs the length of the Amalfi Coast. If you want to get to other cities quickly, hop on a ferry from nearly any port. You can get to Capri, Salerno, Ravello, and many more spots by boat once you arrive.

When to Visit

The perfect time to visit the Amalfi Coast depends on the kind of adventure you’re seeking. While the summer months bring in the busiest crowds, they also infuse the Amalfi Coast with an energetic, vibrant spirit—think lively festivals, bustling beach days, and unforgettable nights under the stars. If you crave a dynamic atmosphere and don’t mind the hustle and bustle, visiting in July or August can be a thrilling experience. However, if a more laid-back vibe is your preference, consider the shoulder seasons of May or September, when the weather is warm, the scenery is just as breathtaking, and the charm of each town is more intimate.

April - May

From April onward, the Amalfi Coast starts to come back to life as the temperatures warm up and hotels and shops re-open after the winter. The citrus trees are in bloom, providing wonderful sights and smells, and the number of visitors is far lower than in the summer months. We find spring is one of the best times to visit the region.

June - August

June through to August marks a high point for tourism on the Amalfi Coast, with numerous festivals and events popping up along the cost. Though costs, crowds and temperatures tend to rise, the period offers the greatest diversity of activities, cultural events and performances. Summer is when the Amalfi Coast truly shines: endless sunny days for exploring hidden coves, vibrant street festivals, and the chance to savor outdoor dining with breathtaking sea views. Every moment will be an unforgettable one during the summer months.

September - October

The September and October months are an excellent time to visit the Amalfi Coast. The weather is a bit cooler than in the height of summer making it much more pleasant and relaxing. Additionally, fewer Italians visit and most services are still open.

Towns of the Amalfi Coast

Positano

No Amalfi Coast guide would be complete without recommending Positano. As the largest city in Amalfi Coast, Positano has the majority of things to do. It’s also well connected by boat or bus to any other city (or island) along the coast. We never miss stopping in Positano to snap yet another picture of the homes on the cliff and to see the mesmerizing tiles on the Santa Maria Assunta church. While you’re there we recommend suntanning on the famous Marina Grande beach, dining on the rooftop of Don Giovanni for incredible views, wandering Via Cristoforo Colombo for local shops, and hiking the Path of the Gods for panoramic views of the entire coast.

Ravello

Perched high above the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking panoramic views, charming cobblestone streets, and an air of tranquility that sets it apart from the bustling coastal towns. One of its most iconic landmarks is the historic pavilion of Villa Cimbrone, a stunning architectural masterpiece that offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in Italy. Ravello is the perfect destination for those seeking romance, culture, and relaxation. Whether you’re sipping limoncello on a terrace overlooking the sea or exploring the town’s rich history, Ravello promises an unforgettable escape. Make it your next getaway and experience the magic for yourself!

Perched between Positano and Amalfi, Praiano is a peaceful coastal retreat that captures the essence of the Amalfi Coast without the crowds. With its stunning cliffside views, charming whitewashed homes, and hidden beaches like Marina di Praia, this picturesque town is perfect for those seeking a more intimate and authentic experience.

The heart of the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi is a town of timeless beauty, rich history, and breathtaking coastal scenery. Once a powerful maritime republic, Amalfi is now a charming seaside escape. Wander through its picturesque streets, enjoy a boat ride along the coast, or relax at its sun-soaked beaches. Amalfi offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation.

Perched on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is the perfect gateway to the Amalfi Coast, blending stunning scenery with rich history and lively culture. Famous for its fragrant lemon groves and world-renowned limoncello, this charming town offers breathtaking sea views, elegant piazzas, and a vibrant atmosphere.
