Subject: Lakeview Insider - "That Man On the Cross"

"One of the criminals who were hanged railed at Him, saying, 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!' But the other rebuked him, saying, 'Do you not fear God, since you are under the same of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.' And he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.' And He said to him, 'Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.'
–Luke 23:39-43

CAMPFIRE THOUGHTS:
The Man on the Cross

As we approach Holy Week, a story that always jumps out at me comes from Luke’s account of Jesus’s crucifixion.

We see the first explicit statement of saving faith. We see a sinful man, deservedly being put to death for the sins he has committed, suddenly being forgiven and redeemed in an instant by our Savior while He is actively being crucified to save this man (and us).

Alistair Begg imagined the scenario unfolding this way as this thief on the cross entered paradise: He meets an angel guarding the pearly gates who asks him what he is doing there. The thief doesn’t have an answer other than “I don’t know.” The angel, perplexed, asks, “What do you mean you don’t know?!” Soon, the angel gets a higher up and they begin to grill the thief on his basis for being there. They discover that the thief has no theological knowledge or any other merit that warrants his being there, and the angel explodes and asks one final time, “On what basis are you here?!” The thief finally responds with the only acceptable answer and says, “The man on the middle cross said I can come.”

It doesn’t make any earthly sense. How on earth could this thief, or we, possibly deserve this salvation? Doesn’t God know what we have done? Shouldn’t he give us what we deserve? How could He take our place? But that is the only way of salvation. Like the thief on the cross, we too are saved, not by any works or merit of our own, but by the grace and finished work of Jesus’s death on the cross and His glorious Easter resurrection.

As we approach Holy Week, let us fix our eyes on the cross of Christ and make Him the focus of our attention, knowing the amazing grace we have all received in Him, just like the thief on the cross.

We get to come and be with God.

Praise Jesus!

LAKEVIEW LOWDOWN:
Summer is Coming!

A summer at camp is a HUGE undertaking, and it's one that takes the support and love of hundreds of people to make happen. If you want to help support the life-changing experiences that will happen this summer, here are a few ways you can help:

  • We Need Male Counselors! Our biggest staffing need right now is male counselors—we have three spots left to fill. Do you know a young man who loves Jesus and is looking for a meaningful summer experience? Encourage him to apply today and be part of something life-changing!

  • Wish List Donation. If you haven’t given anything from our Wish List yet, now is a great time to help make camp extra special for our campers this summer! Every item you donate enhances the camp experience and frees up funds for other programming needs.

  • Volunteer for our 6th Village Cluster Project. Work continues on our 6th Village Cluster, and we still need volunteers in April and May to help us get everything squared away before camp. If you can lend a hand, contact us or call our office at 812-342-4815.

  • Magazine Donations Needed. Got old kid-appropriate magazines lying around? We use them for button-making crafts, and our stock is running low. If you’re visiting camp or attending our Open House, bring them along and drop them off with any staff member.

Thanks everyone. It is always humbling to see how people show up and God works through your efforts.

SESSION SPOTLIGHT:

Hike n Huck Disc Golf Tourney

Looking for a fun, relaxing way to enjoy the great outdoors, spend time with family and friends, and support Lakeview Ministries, all at the same time? Then plan to join us at camp next Sunday, April 6 for the second annual Hike n Huck Disc Golf Tourney!

This beginner-friendly event is all about having fun—whether you’re new to disc golf or a seasoned player. Instead of playing solo, we’ll be using best-shot doubles, meaning you and a partner both throw, then continue play from the best shot. Don’t have a partner? No problem! We’ll help you find one. Plus, we’ll have extra discs for anyone who wants to try the sport for the first time.

Last year’s event helped fund nine permanent baskets on the course, and this year’s funds will continue improving the course—including a long-term goal of expanding to nine holes at Lakeview VillagesSponsorships are also available—businesses can sponsor a hole and get a custom basket wrap!

Sign up using the link below, or come on out the day off and sign up on site! And if you know anyone who enjoys playing disc golf, let them know about this tournament. Then come Hike, Huck, and Have Fun—all while making a lasting impact at Lakeview!

FROM THE ARCHIVES:

Help Us Build Our 60 Years of Memories Collection

Have you shared a memory you have from camp yet for our "60 Years of Memories" collection?

For six decades, Lakeview Ministries has been a place of adventure, faith, and lifelong friendships. Now, as we celebrate 60 years of camp, we need YOUR help to build a collection of stories that will bring those memories to life!

We're asking everyone—campers, staff, volunteers, and friends from across the years—to share their favorite Lakeview memories. Whether it's a highlight from your week as a camper, a powerful faith moment, your favorite canteen snack, or a friendship that has stood the test of time, we want to hear about it!

And here’s the best part: Every person who submits a story between now and May 1 will be entered into a special raffle to win a $50 gift certificate to the Lakeview Shirt Shack!

Our hope is to hear from people across the decades—spanning all the years of camp history. This summer, we’ll be displaying these stories for our campers, creating a walk-through memory wall in the dining hall. Imagine the impact of today’s campers reading about the experiences, traditions, and faith-filled moments of those who came before them!

Help us honor the past and inspire the future—share your memory today!

CAMPAIGN UPDATE:

Ever Faithful

Just a quick reminder that we’ll be launching the public phase of our new capital campaign: For Generations to Come! in May. As you and your family prayerfully consider how you might support camp with this campaign, we thought you’d enjoy a quick reminder about one of the large ways God has provided for Lakeview Ministries in past campaigns. Thanks to generous support from people just like you, we were able to build the beautiful Village Lodge, and the entire Lakeview Villages side of camp. Since that campaign, Lakeview Villages has served over 10,000 campers in the last 13 summers, and the Village Lodge is our most popular building for retreats, hosting groups nearly every single weekend of the year. God is always faithful, and we are grateful for your faithful support of this ministry as well!

We love to talk! Reply to this email and share your thoughts.

You are loved in Christ.
