| A little while ago, we were approached by a publisher and asked whether we’d think about writing a book. As you can imagine, we gave that idea about two seconds’ thought before responding with an excitable “We’d LOVE to!” We booked tickets to meet in Melbourne to plan the content, sent through a formal proposal and some sample chapters and the response from the publisher was: "I love the writing style. It's warm, engaging and really resonated with me".
Now they’re offering us a contract, and we have six months to write 50,000 words. Around our full-time work. And our families… |
| | We’ll use the nooks and crannies in the day and write a few paragraphs here and there. Emma’s already applied the My 15 Minutes approach to book-writing. Her 65,000-word teen novel was created by seizing slices of time to make progress in small increments.
When people say they don’t have time, often it’s because they’re waiting for a situation to be perfect. In this case, they might envisage a writers’ retreat, or a beach-house overlooking the ocean, or complete solitude. Or, at the very least, a clear desk.The “I’ll be ready when…” conditions we place on ‘starting’ really hold us back. So these will be 50,000 words woven in, around, over and under our everyday working lives. They’ll be words written in small stages—inching a little further ahead each day until we’ve strung together a book in baby steps.
We’ve seen the results people are getting from the My 15 Minutes program. It’s possible to do all sorts of unlikely things in 15-minute increments. Writing a book is no different from losing weight, decluttering your home, building a business or saving money. If you start today and do a little more tomorrow and the next day, you’ll achieve it. |
