Is it time to re-negotiate the terms of your life?
This is it: the ‘year proper’. Back into school-term routines. Lunches, timetables, extra-curricular activities… a whirl of appointments and commitments that can leave us breathless.

During the week, we interviewed nutritionist Kate Freeman from The Healthy Eating Hub, about how she manages good nutrition and exercise despite all the demands on her time as a busy mum of two and business owner.

One of the BEST tips she offered was some wisdom from her mum, who told Kate it’s important to re-negotiate our lives every so often.

What worked for us as individuals, or couples, and as families, in 2014, might not work a year later. People are older, routines are different, commitments have changed, our work might be more or less challenging than it was...

Rather than dig in our heels and think 'That's it! I can't do X or Y (eg. exercise, eat well) because it just won't fit in my life', Kate encourages us to look for opportunities to re-negotiate how we’re managing things.

She used to take her children with her to the gym and use the creche. Now they’re too old for that — they’re bored there — so she’s re-negotiated on exercise. She works out in the park and on the playground equipment while they play (and they think she’s pretty cool while she scuttles across the monkey bars!).

We can let ourselves slip into a defeatist mindset sometimes, thinking things are too hard. They’re often not too hard - we’re just trying to squash what we want into the wrong container. Change the container, or the structure of our lives, and we’ll find things slide in more easily.

So, if you’re feeling stressed at the start of another ‘year proper’, ask yourself if it’s time to re-negotiate. Maybe that means dropping something or asking for help or changing a routine. Maybe it means saying ‘no’ or ‘yes’ or ‘let me think about that before committing…’.

What it WON'T look like is staying the same and trying to force a new situation into how your life used to be…

Members in our VIP program will have access to Kate’s expert wisdom, and some practical tips on changing your mindset around well-being, during the first of 7 deep-dive webinars and activity sheets, which we’re releasing today.
