The French cosmetics company, L’Oreal, coined the advertising slogan: “Because you’re worth it” over 40 years ago. The reality is, though, that a lot of us second-guess that slogan in our own lives.
  • We put things we’d love to buy back on a shelf in the shops
  • We turn down invitations for a night out
  • We choose the housework over lazing in the sun with a book
In all of these little choices, what we’re really saying is that ‘someone else is worth more than me’.
  • They’re worth the money we spend on them instead of ourselves
  • Their time is worth more than ours
  • Their energy should be saved at the expense of our own
We mightn’t express these thoughts aloud, but our actions speak strongly. There’s a wave of self-lessness — particularly amongst women. An epidemic of ‘lovely’. An entrenched habit of generosity towards almost everyone else but ourselves.

Behind it, we’re tired. We’re secretly frustrated. We’re disappointed and feeling let down.

Worse, there’s a nagging thought that it’s not really about others pushing into line ahead of us (the way we sometimes like to complain about). It’s about us letting people in.

We’re the ones shaping these patterns. We’re the ones saying ‘yes’ to other people and ‘no’ to ourselves. It’s not ‘just how life is’ at all. It’s just how we’re making things…

Have you become so comfortable showing other people they’re worth it that you’ve lost yourself in the process?
Our challenge to you today is to do one thing that shows YOU’RE worth it. Take one simple action. Say ‘yes’ to something that you want to do, or have.

It can be as simple as taking fifteen minutes at lunch time to walk barefoot in a grassy park, or to duck into a cafe and order a coffee while you flick through a magazine.

Whatever it is, grasp the chance and do it—guilt-free, all-in, enjoying every second of the time you invest in yourself, your well-being, your relationships, your own work instead of the work you do to mop up all the mess around you.

These small steps towards improving our lives are steps that take us further than we ever imagined.
Go for it...because you're worth it!
