Subject: What is old is new again

Particularly leather goods

In a recent conversation with a friend, we were talking about the wisdom in "old quotations." The words might change but the messages imparted by the great thinkers tend to repeat over time. Many such cases.

Another friend of mine embraces things that are often forgotten, but still practical. RC Cola, the George Foreman Grill, manual transmission vehicles, and the fanny pack.

RC never gets its love in the culture. It is a Coca-Cola (and a bit of Pepsi) world, after all. Yet, RC probably wins a few more "taste tests" than it loses, too.

The Foreman Grill was the infomercial king of products for a while. Still cooks as well as it ever did, but Big George isn't on TV as much as he once was...if at all. Though I did see him Tweet today (maybe X is what we're calling it now?).

Manual transmissions are a pleasure to drive, but it takes some time to learn. Plus, the automatic is way easier. Don't have to deal with the third pedal (or explain it to the kids these days).

The king of retro is the fanny pack, however. This fellow is known in many circles as "Mr. Fanny Pack." As Willie Mays Hays may have said, "Don't steal home without it."

I have an old nylon fanny that I had laying around myself. At one point my mother thought it would be a practical accoutrement on some trip that we were going on. She wasn't wrong. I just never wore it.

Now my son is fascinated by the pack. Wears it everywhere. Ferrets away items as diverse as golf balls, trading cards, coins, screws, and small screwdrivers. He's six. He loves it. I've since "gifted" it to him.

So the fanny pack is making a comeback. Totally practical. These days, they don't have to be those puffy nylon things that stick out like a potbelly. You can get them in leather, and they are actually cool.

Maybe a little "European," as Jerry Seinfeld may have said, but a practical man's (or woman's) bag.

Our friends at Add Style have the "new style" fanny packs you're looking for. Get them embossed for free.

Also, other items like leather journals, wallets, and dop kits.
