There's do'ers and don'ters and I wills and won'ters
and them, that don't even try
Givers and takers, movers and shakers
And them that are just passing by
From “Walk Our Own Road”
duet w/ Randy Travis & Kris Kristofferson
on the Travis album Heroes & Friends (1990)
Apologies to the non-country music fans out there, but "we all have to walk our own road," as Travis and Kristofferson sung so beautifully, three and a half decades ago.
Country music often tells the sad, yet often empathetic, tales of drifters and ne'er-do-wells. A lot of country tunes encourage us to knock back a whiskey or a few beers—at the very least—rather than go make something of ourself.
However, off the top of my head, some songs from Travis Tritt ("I'm Gonna Be Somebody," "It's a Great Day to Be Alive," etc.) and a few others refute that general sentiment.
Nevertheless, the sad-sack songs from Music City are great entertainment, but are often not too uplifting. To the contrary.
What can be uplifting, however, is to walk our own road and do it effectively. To do this, it helps to have and maintain structure in one's life.
When you are out there drifting with the wind —"Skidrows and winos and some folks that I know/ that don't do like I think they should"— you likely lack structure and thus are not optimizing your performance.
A book I wrote about in these pages last week, and have revisited even more lately, can help you with just that: optimizing performance.
Last year, I put together a few videos for my Inner Sphere program, talking about the book and the lessons contained within. For a taste of what both the book and the video series can offer, we released to the public—just today—one of the short talks I did:
Links to the books mentioned and for info on the O'Leary's Inner Sphere are in the show notes on the YouTube video.
We hope to have a few more of these lessons finished for public consumption a little bit down the line.
"In the end where it'll end up – the Lord only knows
But we all have to walk our own road"
As always,
Brian
