Subject: Together we can make it, baby

from the poor side of town

The other night in one of the group calls I facilitate, we were talking real estate. Someone said that a particular property was on the "rich side of town." Another said, "well, that's better than being on the poor side of town."

This is objectively true, yet in our culture many of us are resistant to relate or confirm such an observation to others.

I've been gaslit enough in my life where my initial reaction was to find a way around agreeing…for a moment. I do not appreciate this about my personality, by the way.

Such episodes are reasons I despise government schooling and the corporate media—for helping to make me reflexively doubt objective reality.

But I did hear "poor side of town" and I immediately thought "hey, Johnny Rivers!"

I said something about the 1966 single by Rivers, "Poor Side of Town," to the group. I got mostly blank stares, so we continued talking real estate a bit longer.

As a man with eclectic tastes, however, I wanted to know more about the Rivers song.

"I don't know what inspired it," said Rivers, in a 2015 interview with Forbes. "It wasn't from any personal experience, because I was living in Beverly Hills [laughs]. People just relate to it."

The song was arranged by L.A.-based producer Marty Paich, whose son, David, happens to be a founding member of the rock band TOTO.

An interesting aside, we have a TOTO throne—no relation—in the house and my seven-year-old finally noticed the branding.

He also has a small, but great playlist on Spotify that he listens to regularly.

"Is that the same TOTO as 'Africa' TOTO?" he asked.

I had to let him down easy that things can be spelled the same but have dramatically different meanings.

As always,
