Inaugural [TSoL] weekly links & notes newsletter

Weekly Links & Notes from
Tom's School of Life

Each Tuesday (or Wednesday morning), in this email we will recap the week that was in the TSoL accountability groups the best we can. We'll have a list of the links mentioned and some of the notes taken within the weekly accountability groups.

I have no further offer—

you have already taken me up on my offer to get on this email list.

It is probably worth repeating some of what I set out to accomplish in the first one of these newsletters.

First newsletter in case you didn't get it …

If you don't read this email, you'll end up … serving my kids fries at a drive through on our way to a skiing trip.

My proposition for these emails is that I will collate as many of the links and most of the notes I take from all of my weekly calls into one email.

Length will vary, based on content, and my availability to write about all the content.

Furthermore, if you're looking for work, consider this a free job board. Same thing if you're hiring. Got a business that people need to find out about? Just let me know.

If you have affiliate links, I will post them.

(This warning goes to everyone, though: please DO NOT use Amazon affiliate links within email. If you choose to use Amazon affiliate links in emails, it is quite likely that your account will get torpedoed … I already experienced that one. You're welcome. For any Amazon links here, I typically use the link shortener built in to Amazon.com, not a known affiliate link.)

Keep in mind that this newsletter is not meant to replace the Chat or Forum or Tom's regular [TSoL] emails, but should serve as a more timely reference that can connect more people within Tom's School with each other.

If members are referenced in these pages, it is my intention to do it either by name or by their rocket chat handle or both.

I plan to send these letters out sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning with the occasional "bonus" email.

Links and categories are in no particular order this week. I tried categorizing them the best I could. If anyone has suggestions on how to do it better, I will listen. I may not implement.

You'll probably see a lot of experimentation in form going forward. This is not the way I like to do email. I like plain text and no pictures.

I shall consider this project my "comfort challenge" for the week.

This week's featured business

Last week, Hunter Hastings (@HunterHastings) officially launched The Value Creators online course. The ideas and framework for the course were nurtured within the School Of Life accountability groups.

We're also happy to report that the course comes with the endorsement of the boss, @TomWoods himself (see below).

The core message of The Value Creators course is that:

for businesses of all sizes, value creation is the key to success.

The Value Creators course identifies 11 principles of value creation that stem from the study of Austrian Economics.

Instructors include some of the top professors already teaching in "mainstream" business schools—including Mark Packard, Per Bylund, Gordon Miller, and David Rapp.

The 11 principles covered are:

  • How to think about Value

  • Understanding Customers

  • Entrepreneurship as the function of value creation

  • Empathy as the #1 business tool

  • How to think about Innovation

  • Design as a process of working backwards from customer needs

  • Marketing as behavior

  • The subjective interpretation of Accounting and Finance to enable entrepreneurship

  • Organization design for value creation

  • Error correction as knowledge building

  • Business as a flow

Try Things At Least Twice Just the second attempt at anything hard will be much easier. Not a little bit, but by A LOT. It is true of almost everything. — Bond Halbert  https://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/Boron/BoronLetterCh1.htm

One idea

Learn to accept your mediocrity. No one's really that great.

You know who's great? The people that just put tremendous amount of hours into it. It's a game of tonnage.
