Human beings are obsessed with labels. Simple defining terms or descriptions that will put others in a neat and tidy box.
"What do you do?"
"How much money do you make?"
"What car are you driving these days?"
"Do you have a mileage plan for your credit card? Which one?"
"Sweet pants. Are they cotton Dockers?"
It's not that these aren't important questions. The answers will provide context on who and what a person is all about.
You are not obliged to tell people the answers, however. Sometimes they're a bit personal. Other times you might think the simple answers you give to simple questions come off as more than a bit misleading.
In our coaching program, we'll qualify you before we can work together. There's usually a discovery call involved, but the above questions will never be part of the discussion.
We're about moving forward. We're in the business of creating better lives, not simply dwelling on the significant losses (or even minor wins) of the past. It's about taking massive action.
In the film Fight Club (1999), Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt) may have put it best:
You are not how much money you have in the bank.
You are not the car you drive.
You are not the content of your wallet.
You are not your f***ing khakis.”
We agree.
As always,
Brian
