Subject: I will not motivate you

But I will provide you all the resources I can

“The moment you commit and quit holding back, all sorts of unforeseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance will rise up to help you. The simple act of commitment is a powerful magnet for help.”

–Napoleon Hill (1883-1970), author of Think and Grow Rich

The story of Napoleon Hill is not what his books make him out to be. For instance, he probably wasn't as honest and forthright as he made himself look.

On the other hand, almost all of what he taught worked back then, it works now, and has always worked. This quote is no exception.

Another fellow who I've been reading a lot from lately, John Carlton, had this to say about motivation,

"You just gotta want it. Not 'really, really, really want it. But 'get off your ass and start working' want it. Huge difference."

I see the difference every day with the people in my small groups. People can often be frustrated at the pace of their accomplishments or complete lack thereof.

However, the folks with the laser focus on what they desire—the get off their ass and start working people—are living their best lives.

When we don't commit fully to something, it's often because we're afraid of failure. I contend that I've never really failed—I've just had a lot more opportunities to learn than a lot of other folks.

If you think this is motivation, you've got another thing coming. The one thing I don't do is motivate.

I tell the folks in my small groups that I coach: attitude, effort, and behavior. I don't motivate. That's up to you.
