Subject: Does 'mindset' work?

Consider dressing oneself

There are plenty of schools of thought when it comes to "mindset." Perhaps the term isn't so useful, but let's stipulate that it is for the moment.

A book I read a few years back by Carol Dweck called Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Her thesis is that we can choose between one of two "mindsets": The fixed mindset or the growth mindset.

The idea is that it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed one, all things being equal.

Nevertheless, in order to get anything done in life we need to take action. It requires a bit of "mindset."

Simple. Action. Making decisions leads to growth.

Letting things happen—inaction—doesn't move most of us along life's path in a satisfying manner.

Getting dressed, for instance. We choose what clothes to wear and if and when we will put them on. Both "action items."

Even with such a simple example, you'll still hear objections.

"But you have to put on clothes every day..."

Do you?

Most of us shower in our birthday suit. Probably not socially acceptable to go to the grocery store that way, but it is a choice to take action on it either way.

If one decides to take the leap and get clothed for the day, it is certainly wise to consider "social acceptability" in most situations.

If one has been paying attention to the news of late, maybe wearing a "hoody" and shorts in the halls of the United States Senate does not fit the socially acceptable description (as most human beings define it). But the junior senator from Pennsylvania chooses to do so, regardless.

Courageous, some will say.

Perhaps.

Though, whether it is innate courage or because of his genuine imbecilic nature—likely caused by a recent medical condition—or not, the senator still chooses to dress like an overgrown 7-year-old.

While the following clip is not footage from the Capitol, this is what a senator in today's republic looks and sounds like. You be the judge:

(Though the tweet comes from Sean Hannity, I am no fan of the Fox News host. Simply laying out the reality for folks)

Choices. Action.

Got to give it to the senator... he took action to get in such a position. More than most of us can say.

Yet, he is an unserious man.

I talk and write about our "unserious culture" ... a lot. There is no doubt that we live in one in the current day.

Our shows and these emails are but a modest effort to buck today's dominant culture by giving the Good Folks out there "serious content."

Something to think about at the very least, even though you may think I'm full of it ... at first.

But, the more you listen to my ideas, the more likely you are to agree.

While I can't say I will develop the thought patterns of a future senator, I am firmly on the side of anyone bucking the trend as to what is regarded as "senatorial" in today's culture.

That's why we're opening the doors to O'Leary's Inner Sphere, a virtual mastermind, where our aim is to take your talent on a journey toward a profitable career.

People with the right mindset. A "growth" mindset.

More importantly, folks who take action.

Be willing to serve others and be served.
