Part of the beauty of homeschooling is that we can live life – real life – alongside our children and continually pass onto them how to ‘do’ life well. (On the swing side - we can also pass on to them how to do life badly!!)
As we live out our normal “grown up” lives we face things like car repairs, tax payments, medical aid or insurance claim battles, menu planning and grocery shopping. We show our children how to live life as an adult when we incorporate them into our worlds. They see the ins and outs of homemaking, business, household admin and social interactions with a wide range of people - from the teller at the supermarket to the branch manager at the bank! All the time our children are picking up our verbal and non-verbal language and making assessments about our interactions with people and how we handle the mundane things of life.
As homeschoolers we have the privilege of showing our children how to do these things as part of our daily routine. It is easy to draw your younger children into housekeeping, gardening, shopping and other daily routines so that when they are older these things are second nature. As they grow older, you can give them freedom to do these and other things for themselves, instead of doing it for them!

| For instance, in Shirley’s home it was recently tax time and her children were gathered around the table to help sort and calculate so that they could learn about this process. Our children have also been included in the process of buying and selling vehicles. They go with us to view prospective buys and they have seen how we handle selling a vehicle privately. They have seen and heard what questions to ask, what to look out for and how to conduct the transaction. Our eldest recently negotiated the sale of her self-purchased motor bike herself with great success - and profit too!

| | In Wendy’s home, her children have all worked alongside her in their family business selling free-range meat and other products online and at a local market. Her one daughter used to do the meal planning and grocery shopping for the family too before starting college this year.
These things should not be seen as ad-ons to a busy homeSCHOOLing curriculum, but just part of what HOMEschooling is.
There is so much emphasis in the high school years on studying to pass Cambridge or GED or another school leaving certificate that often parents can forget that one of the reasons they choose to homeschool was to impart skills for life, not just skills to pass a test.
There may be some skills like learning first aid or driving lessons to pass a driver’s license test that may need to be outsourced to others in your community, but for the most part, if we are intentional about it, we are quite capable of equipping our children for life by engaging with them day to day, so that they can learn from our life experiences.
The goal is not just to raise well-educated kids, but well-equipped adults.

This package (depicted above) is a literature-based unit study, suitable for a wide age group (ages 7-14). "My kids and I have absolutely loved following this beautiful curriculum and every homeschool family living in SA or SA expats should do this programme – your children are seriously missing out on the best way to learn about our beautiful country if not!” ~ Simone Eichler on Facebook, 20 December 2015
